In March, due to the new crown pneumonia epidemic and the shortage of chip supply, mainland automobile production and sales fell by 9.1% and 11.7% year-on-year, respectively. Sales of new energy vehicles continued to grow at a high rate, with a market penetration rate of 21.7%.
In the first quarter of 2022, mainland automobile production and sales improved steadily, up 2.0% and 0.2% year-on-year, respectively. The production and sales of new energy vehicles increased by 1.4 times year-on-year.
January and March vehicle sales fell 11.7% year-on-year
In March, production and sales of automobiles totaled 2.241 million units, up 23.4% and 28.4% month-on-month, and down 9.1% and 11.7% year-on-year, respectively.
From January to March, automobile production and sales totaled 6.484 million units, up 2.0% and 0.2% year-on-year, respectively, down 6.8 percentage points and 7.3 percentage points, respectively, from January to February.
(1) Passenger car sales in March decreased by 0.6% y/y
In March, production and sales of passenger cars totaled 1.881 million units, down 0.1% y/y, and sales totaled 1.864 million units, down 0.6% y/y. By model, production and sales of sedans totaled 881,000 units and 872,000 units, up 2.3% and 0.2% year-on-year, respectively; PRODUCTION and sales of SUVs totaled 888,000 units and 876,000 units, down 0.3% and 0.1% year-on-year, respectively; MPV production and sales totaled 76,000 units and 71,000 units, down 28.5% and 23.7% year-on-year, respectively; and crossover passenger car production and sales totaled 37,000 units and 45,000 units, up 39.4% and 34.1% year-on-year, respectively.
From January to March, production and sales of passenger cars totaled 5.499 million units, up 11.0% y/y, and sales totaled 5.545 million units, up 9.0% y/y. By model, production and sales of sedans totaled 2.554 million units, up 11.1% and 8.4% year-on-year, respectively; production and sales of SUVs totaled 2.650 million units and 2.667 million units, up 12.7% and 10.4% year-on-year, respectively; MPV production and sales totaled 202,000 units and 204,000 units, down 15.4% and 7.8% year-on-year, respectively; and crossover passenger car production and sales totaled 94,000 units and 89,000 units, up 40.0% year-on-year, respectively. and 35.0%.
In March, Chinese brand passenger cars sold a total of 904,000 units, up 21.5% year-on-year, accounting for 48.5% of total passenger car sales, and the share increased by 8.8 percentage points year-on-year.
From January to March, Chinese brand passenger cars sold a total of 2.547 million units, up 21.0% year-on-year, accounting for 45.9% of total passenger car sales, and the share increased by 4.6 percentage points year-on-year. Among them, sedan sales were 923,000 units, up 45.2% year-on-year, with a market share of 35.7%; SUVs sold 1.425 million units, up 13.3% year-on-year, with a market share of 53.4%; and MPV sales of 110,000 units, down 24.1% year-on-year, with a market share of 54.1%.
(2) Commercial vehicle sales in March down 43.5% y/y
In March, production and sales of commercial vehicles totaled 360,000 units, down 38.0% y/y, and sales totaled 43.5% y/y. By model, truck production and sales totaled 325,000 units and 332,000 units, down 39.0% and 44.8% year-on-year, respectively, while passenger car production and sales totaled 36,000 units and 38,000 units, down 27.9% and 27.8% year-on-year, respectively.
From January to March, production and sales of commercial vehicles totaled 985,000 units, down 29.7% y/y, and sales totaled 965,000 units, down 29.7% y/y. By model, truck production and sales totaled 895,000 units and 873,000 units, down 30.7% and 32.8% year-on-year, respectively, while passenger car production and sales totaled 90,000 units and 91,000 units, down 18.5% and 18.7% year-on-year, respectively.
Sales of new energy vehicles in February and March increased by 1.1 times year-on-year
In March, production and sales of new energy vehicles totaled 465,000 units and 484,000 units, up 1.1 times year-on-year, with a market penetration rate of 21.7%. By model, the production and sales of pure electric vehicles reached 376,000 units and 396,000 units, up 1.1 times year-on-year, respectively; the production and sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles were 89,000 units and 88,000 units, up 1.6 times and 1.4 times year-on-year, respectively; and the production and sales of fuel cell vehicles were 500 units and 367 units, up 10.1 times and 5.2 times year-on-year, respectively.
From January to March, production and sales of new energy vehicles totaled 1.293 million units and 1.257 million units, respectively, up 1.4 times year-on-year, with a market penetration rate of 19.3%. By model, the production and sales of pure electric vehicles were 1.036 million units and 1.007 million units, an increase of 1.3 times year-on-year; the production and sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles were 256,000 units and 249,000 units, up 2.3 times and 2.0 times year-on-year, respectively; the production and sales of fuel cell vehicles were 856 units and 738 units, up 7.2 times and 3.9 times year-on-year, respectively.
Third, january and February key enterprises operating income fell by 0.9% year-on-year
From January to February, the key enterprises (groups) in the automobile industry achieved a cumulative operating income of 625.62 billion yuan, down 0.9% year-on-year; the cumulative total profit and tax was 65.66 billion yuan, an increase of 16.0% year-on-year.
Automobile exports in March increased by 28.8% year-on-year
In March, 170,000 vehicles were exported, up 28.8% y/y. By model, passenger car exports were 121,000 units, up 21.8% year-on-year, and commercial vehicles were exported 49,000 units, up 49.8% year-on-year. Exports of new energy vehicles totaled 16,000 units, up 71.5% year-on-year.
From January to March, 582,000 vehicles were exported, up 58.3% year-on-year. By model, passenger car exports increased by 61.9% y/y to 452,000 units, while commercial vehicle exports increased by 47.2% y/y to 130,000 units. Exports of new energy vehicles totaled 120,000 units, up 2.9 times year-on-year.
