As the first cadet of the Whampoa Military Academy, Li Yutang participated in the Eastern Expedition and the Northern Expedition after graduation, and made great achievements. After the outbreak of the July 7 Incident in 1937, Li Yutang led his troops to Shanghai and participated in the battle of Songhu, which attracted worldwide attention, and then successively participated in the Battle of Xuzhou and the Battle of Changsha, and made outstanding achievements.
