CAAM: New energy vehicles sold 484,000 units in March, with a penetration rate of 19.3% in the first quarter

"Automobile production and sales in March fell year-on-year, but new energy vehicles continued to maintain rapid growth year-on-year." Caucus said.

On April 11, the China Automobile Association released the March automobile production and sales data. According to the data, sales of new energy vehicles in March were 484,000 units, an increase of 114.1% year-on-year. Among them, the sales volume of new energy commercial vehicles in March was 24,000 units, an increase of 82.5% month-on-month.

From January to March, the cumulative sales of new energy vehicles were 1.257 million units, an increase of 138.6% year-on-year. Among them, the cumulative sales of new energy commercial vehicles were 49,000 units, an increase of 97.9% year-on-year.

According to the analysis of the China Automobile Association, from the perspective of automobile supply, the shortage of chips has not been significantly alleviated, the price of raw materials for power batteries has risen rapidly, further pushing up the manufacturing costs of enterprise products, the production and operation activities of automobile enterprises have been affected to a certain extent, and the overall situation is less than expected; from the perspective of automobile consumption, the consumption momentum is obviously insufficient, and compared with the same period, it shows a certain decline.

Sales of new energy vehicles in March were nearly 500,000 units

From January to March, total vehicle sales were 6.509 million units, new energy vehicles were sold 1.257 million units, and the penetration rate of new energy vehicles reached 19.3%.

From January to March, sales of new energy vehicles reached 1.257 million units, an increase of 1.4 times year-on-year. Among them, the sales of pure electric vehicles reached 1.007 million units, an increase of 1.3 times year-on-year; the sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles reached 249,000 units, an increase of 2.0 times; and the sales of fuel cell vehicles completed 738 units, an increase of 3.9 times.

In the first quarter, automobile production and sales increased slightly year-on-year, and the growth rate fell significantly from the same period last year. From the perspective of subdivided models, the growth rate of passenger car production and sales is higher than the overall level of the industry; the production and sales of commercial vehicles are still declining rapidly year-on-year; the production and sales of new energy vehicles continue to grow rapidly, with production and sales exceeding one million units, and the strategic leading role of new energy vehicles is further highlighted.

Production and sales of commercial vehicles fell year-on-year, but new energy logistics vehicles gained momentum

From the perspective of subdivided models, in March 2022, the production and sales of commercial vehicles reached 360,000 units and 370,000 units, respectively, down 38% and 43.5% year-on-year. In March, 77,000 heavy trucks, 12,000 medium-sized trucks, 182,000 light trucks and 61,000 mini trucks were sold. The four types of trucks showed different degrees of decline year-on-year, and the decline in heavy trucks was the most obvious, down 66.6% year-on-year.

Although the data of new energy logistics vehicles in March has not yet been released, the sales of new energy logistics vehicles in February increased by 351% year-on-year, of which the total sales of new energy light trucks were 953, an increase of 331% year-on-year. It can be boldly predicted that the sales situation of new energy logistics vehicles in March will still improve.

In general, looking forward to the situation throughout the year, affected by the macro-economy, the development of the automotive industry is facing the triple pressure of demand contraction, supply shock and expected weakening, and the task of stabilizing growth is very arduous.

The China Automobile Association put forward relevant suggestions in this regard, the local government should refine the national policies and measures on stable growth as soon as possible, and enterprises should continue to actively take effective countermeasures, at the same time, we also suggest that government departments introduce policies and measures to promote automobile consumption, including the previous effective purchase tax halving policy.
