According to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on May 11, domestic automobile production and sales in April reached 2.406 million units and 2.359 million units, up 12.8% and 9.3% y/y, respectively, and down 10.5% and 12.5% m/m, respectively.

Liu Zheng, director of the industry information department of the China Automobile Association, said that in April, the overall economic prosperity level of the mainland continued to expand, the three major indexes continued to remain in the expansion range, the production of manufacturing enterprises continued to accelerate, the market demand continued to recover, and the confidence of enterprises in the recent market development was generally stable. China's automobile production and sales declined month-on-month, showing rapid year-on-year growth, of which new energy vehicles and automobile exports continued to maintain rapid growth year-on-year.

In the first four months, the production and sales of automobiles in mainland China reached 9.012 million units and 9.079 million units, up 7.9% and 10.2% year-on-year, respectively, with the production growth rate increasing by 1.5 percentage points and the sales growth rate decreasing by 0.3 percentage points compared with the first quarter.

Specifically, passenger vehicle production and sales in April totaled 2.048 million units and 2.001 million units, reflecting a 9% m/m decrease and a 10.5% y/y increase, respectively. Among the main categories of passenger cars, compared with the same period last year, SUV sales showed double-digit growth, sedan sales increased slightly, and MPV and minivan passenger car sales decreased to varying degrees.

From January to April, passenger vehicle production and sales totaled 7.658 million units and 7.689 million units, up 8.6% and 10.6% y/y, respectively. Among them, the domestic sales of passenger cars were 6.15 million units, a year-on-year increase of 5.9%; Passenger car exports totaled 1.539 million units, reflecting a 34.8% y/y increase.

From the perspective of level, the current sales of traditional fuel vehicles are still mainly concentrated in the A-class, with a cumulative sales of 2.78 million units from January to April, a year-on-year increase of 3.2%. On the other hand, new energy passenger vehicles, except for the A00 class, all other grades showed positive year-on-year growth, of which the D-class increased the most.

In the passenger car market, the market share of Chinese brands remains high. In April, the sales volume of Chinese brand passenger cars was 1.272 million units, a year-on-year increase of 27.3%, accounting for 63.5% of the total passenger car sales, an increase of 8.4 percentage points over the same period of the previous year, and from January to April, a total of 4.664 million units were sold, a year-on-year increase of 26.7%, with a market share of 60.7%.

From January to April, the total sales volume of the top 10 enterprise groups in automobile sales was 7.707 million units, a year-on-year increase of 11%, accounting for 84.9% of the total automobile sales, 0.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year. Among them, the sales of the first three reached 3.09 million units, a year-on-year increase of 6%, and the market share reached 34%.

Vehicle exports from January to April totaled 1.827 million units, reflecting a 33.4% y/y increase. Passenger car exports totaled 1.539 million units, reflecting a 34.8% y/y increase. Commercial vehicle exports totaled 288,000 units, reflecting a 26.5% y/y increase. Among the top 10 vehicle exporters, BYD exported 140,000 units, up 1.4 times y/y, and Great Wall exported 129,000 units, up 74.7% y/y. Geely exported 154,000 units, reflecting a 64.4% y/y increase.

Compared with the overall auto market, the performance of new energy vehicles is more eye-catching. In April, NEV production and sales totaled 870,000 units and 850,000 units, up 35.9% and 33.5% y/y, respectively, with a market share of 36%. From January to April, 2.985 million units and 2.94 million units were completed, up 30.3% and 32.3% y/y, respectively, with a market share of 32.4%.

In terms of driving form, compared with the previous month, the production and sales of pure electric vehicles decreased slightly in April, and the production and sales of the other two major types of new energy vehicles increased to varying degrees; Compared with the same period last year, the production and sales of fuel cell vehicles declined, and the production and sales of the other two major types of new energy vehicles increased to varying degrees.

Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, the export growth rate of new energy vehicles is slightly lower. According to the data, from January to April, NEV exports totaled 421,000 units, reflecting a 20.8% y/y increase. Among them, 337,000 pure electric vehicles were exported, reflecting a 4.5% y/y increase. Plug-in hybrid vehicle exports totaled 83,000 units, reflecting a 2.7-fold y/y increase.

"At present, the export growth rate of the mainland automobile market is greater than that of domestic sales, and the domestic automobile market needs to be further boosted." Liu Zheng said that he believes that with the "Detailed Rules for the Implementation of Automobile Trade-in Subsidy" and the "Notice on Adjusting the Relevant Policies for Auto Loans", etc., the in-depth implementation of relevant policies, as well as the further increase in the pace of innovation and the continuous introduction of a large number of new models, will be conducive to further stimulating the consumption potential of the automobile market and expanding the domestic market demand.
