The evaluation content directory

Smart driving

ID.3 only scored 56 points in the intelligent driving part, this score is relatively average, ID.3's main loss point is that it does not carry automatic parking, and the identification of dummies is not in place. Only in the basic adaptive cruise and lane keeping function performance to show the level of a big factory.

Sensor configuration

Upgrade capabilities

As the first model of Volkswagen's MEB platform, the ID.3 was also not easy, encountering a large number of software errors before delivery, resulting in delayed delivery. In terms of OTAs, although the early OTA was not very smooth, the current overseas ID.3 models have achieved the first vehicle OTA upgrade. However, there is no news of OTA upgrade in domestic ID.3.

Closed site comprehensive testing

Adaptive cruise test

Test conditions: The test car starts the adaptive cruise function at 80km/h, and sets the following distance to the second compartment. Then, during the driving process, the target vehicle will encounter non-emergency congestion in front, and then the target vehicle will slowly stop and start again after 10 seconds after stopping.

High-speed cornering is maintained

Test conditions: The test vehicle starts the adaptive cruise and lane keeping functions at 80km/h, and then the vehicle passes a curve to test the vehicle's lane-keeping ability at high speed.

Special Terrain: Pile Identification

Test conditions: The test vehicle opens all driving assistance functions at a speed of 30km/h to test whether there will be warnings or avoidance actions when the vehicle encounters the pile bucket group.

Pedestrian scene recognition and avoidance

The above three items are tests of the driving assistance function of the vehicle, and as a smart car, in addition to helping the driver "drive", it must also help the driver avoid possible traffic accidents. So next we will conduct an obstacle avoidance test on the Volkswagen ID.3, that is, we will find some dummies and fake cars to come out and see if the ID.3 can brake the avoidance in time.

Fixed dummy identification and avoidance

Test conditions: a child dummy is fixed in the middle of the zebra crossing, the test car starts the adaptive cruise at a speed of 50km/h and all the driving assistance functions pass to see if the test car can stop in time in front of the dummy.

Mobile dummy identification and avoidance

Test conditions: An adult dummy will pass the zebra crossing at a speed of 5km/h, and then the test car will turn on the adaptive cruise at a speed of 40km/h and all the driving assistance functions will pass to see if the test car can stop in time in front of the dummy.

Mobile dummy ghost probe identification and evasion

Test conditions: The child dummy crosses the zebra crossing at a speed of 5km/h, and the test vehicle starts cruising at 40km/h and passes all driving assistance functions. Unlike the mobile dummy crossing test, the ghost probe will add a fixed obstacle car to the front side of the zebra crossing, which will form an emergency situation of "ghost probe" when the test vehicle is close to the zebra crossing.

Tunnel fixed obstacle vehicle identification and avoidance

Test conditions: A fixed target vehicle model is placed in the simulated tunnel, and the test vehicle starts cruising at a speed of 50knm/h and all driving assistance functions are close to see if the final test vehicle can avoid the target vehicle. The project of the tunnel fixed target vehicle is actually a simulation of the situation that when entering the tunnel during daily driving, there is a sudden stop in the tunnel. In this case, because the driver has a large contrast in light inside and outside the tunnel, there is a high probability that the car stopped in the tunnel will not be found in time, which will eventually lead to a rear-end accident. If the vehicle's driver assistance system can avoid this type of obstacle car, it will give the occupants an extra guarantee.

Vehicle emergency congestion identification and avoidance

Test conditions: The target vehicle will be more urgent at a speed of 20km/h, while the test vehicle will cruise at a speed of 50km/h.

Automatic parking

The automatic parking link is actually a bit of a pity. Because when we tested on February 18, the model was 21 top-mounted, and the entire series did not have or could not be equipped with automatic parking functions, but what we did not expect was that on March 18, SAIC Volkswagen released the ID.3 of the 2022 model, and supported the optional automatic parking function on the new model. It is also for this reason that in the automatic parking link, ID.3 can not participate in the challenge, if there is a chance we will go to the latest model to re-brush the test to see what improvement.

Summary of tests

Open road testing

In the actual high-speed road test, ID.3 supports L2-level driver assistance functions, and there is no high-level driving assistance capability, so the performance is relatively traditional, and adaptive cruising and lane keeping can work normally. Adaptive cruise with the performance of the car is similar to the traditional model, in the face of the congestion of the vehicle, the body needs to fully enter the lane to identify the deceleration, so in some special scenarios, there may be a situation where the deceleration is not timely. Lane keeping recognizes lanes and centers better, but in some longer corners, the body occasionally shifts a little toward the center of the curve.

Smart cockpit

As the first model of the MEB platform, although the overall interior style of ID.3 has been learned in its big brother ID.4 and ID.6, Xiaobian believes that the design style of this interior can be said to be more suitable for ID.3. The entire center console is still a very refreshing looking style, and the small and exquisite dashboard interprets "frigidity" to the extreme. In fact, many details of this interior still have intelligent thinking and interaction design, such as window buttons, air conditioning touch buttons, steering wheel buttons and so on. So under the blessing of this series of designs, is the cockpit of ID.3 smart enough?

In the intelligent cockpit evaluation link, we will evaluate and score the cockpit software and hardware indicators such as the vehicle-machine system, instrument information richness, and voice interaction one by one, so that the intelligence of the vehicle cockpit can be quantified. ID.3 in the ICT-300 intelligent cockpit part of the performance, in the UI design, instrument display and mobile phone interconnection performance is more prominent, the car screen effect, screen size are in line with today's standards, clarity is enough. But the performance and voice parts of the car are not perfect. If compared with the models of other joint venture brands, it is a good performance, but as a new energy model, it is still relatively conservative compared with the current new power brands, and there is still some room for progress.

Screen effects

The central control screen of ID.3 is better in terms of resolution and display effect, and Volkswagen uses a distinct and contrasting theme in this set of car UI, so the visual effect is better. In this part of the screen, we will experience and comment according to the size of the screen size, the clarity of the display, the viewing angle, the degree of reflection, the touch texture, etc.

Vehicle performance

The functionality of the car machine is the main indicator to measure the degree of cockpit intelligence, a set of functions rich enough and the interaction is humanized enough to allow the driver to achieve functional control under the premise of ensuring driving safety, and increase the fun of the journey, and some even realize the seamless connection between the car and home. The performance of independent brands in terms of vehicles and machines is often better than that of joint venture brands, and ID.3 cannot get rid of this situation.

In the process of vehicle performance, we will quantitatively score the fluency of the system, UI design, vehicle and machine function richness, instrument function richness, and extensibility.

Fluency, ease of use, and UI design

Whether the operation of the central control screen in the car is smooth and follows the hand directly affects the operation experience of the car machine, and further related to the driving safety, which is a very important performance indicator, so we will take it as a scoring item separately. In addition, whether the interface UI of the car is humanized, and whether the distribution of function pages and functional items is easy enough is also a very important criterion.

The versatility of the car

ID.3 supports online navigation and online music functions, where online navigation can send addresses through mobile phones or WeChat, voice interaction, and panoramic image functions. However, although there are online services and app stores, there are not many supported functions. In terms of the settings of the vehicle itself, ID.3 provides a very rich set of adjustments, including air conditioning, mood lights, vehicle settings, etc. There are more subdivisions that can be set.

Meter feature richness

Extensibility of in-vehicle systems

Intelligent advanced requirements

After looking at the surface texture and internal functions of the car machine, we put forward higher level requirements for the smart cockpit, involving some functions that are more in-depth with the car life, such as remote control of the vehicle, personalized memory, online updates and interesting small functions.

Performance testing

Earlier, we have seen the performance of Volkswagen ID.3 in intelligent driving and intelligent cockpit in the ICT-300 intelligent car evaluation standard. Next, the car itself will be controlled by acceleration, braking, elk, piling and noise tests to see how it performs.

First of all, the results: The Volkswagen ID.3's braking performance and elk performance are very good, but the power is not abundant in electric vehicles, but the flexible body and precise steering, coupled with the high tolerance of the ESP system, make this car very easy to drive.

0-100km/h acceleration test

The acceleration test was carried out in the way of ejection starting, the electronic body stability system remained closed, the rear wheel slipped slightly at the start, but the grip was quickly restored, the mid-section acceleration was still strong, the whole process was very smooth, and the final measured Volkswagen ID.3's 0-100km/h acceleration time was 7.91 seconds.

100-0km/h brake test

Elk test

The purpose of the elk test is to test the vehicle's ability to avoid danger, test the vehicle suspension and dynamic adjustment skills. In our elk test, the default electronic system state is turned on (not manually turned off ESP, etc.) to restore the daily car situation as much as possible.

With its short body, precise steering, and the innate advantage of the weight of the electric car chassis, the Volkswagen ID.3 performed very well in the Elk test.

Winding test

In the pile winding experience project, our standard is not to pursue the limit, but to uniformly choose to pass at 60km/h at constant speed, focusing on observing their continuous change of direction body attitude and body controllability, so that we can more objectively examine the suspension performance of the vehicle. The Volkswagen ID.3 is very stable during the piling process, and the speed is also well controlled at about 60km/h.

Noise test

The noise test in the car tests the sound insulation ability of the vehicle. In addition to testing the in-car noise values under the traditional idle, 60km/h cruise, 90km/h cruising and 120km/h cruising, the noise outside the car is also recorded and compared with the in-car noise value in the idle state to see how the vehicle performs on the sound insulation of the environment.
