Thomas Edison carefully signed and inscribed on the mat with a fountain pen: "Dedicated to our dear daughter Madeleine, Father and Mother." The photographer also lightly signed "George Higgins" with a pencil. The recipient, Madeleine Edison, born in 1888, is the daughter of Thomas Thomas. Edison's fourth child, and the first of his and his new wife, Mina. In 1914, Madeleine married the aviation industrialist John Eyre Sloane, giving birth to four grandchildren for the Edison family.
