Shen Tiancheng
Records are meant to be broken
In 2014, Shen Tiancheng, a newcomer to Tsinghua, learned about the Horse Cup Shuttlecock Competition held by Tsinghua. Kicking the shuttlecock at him, he changed from a childhood game in memory to a formal competitive event.
This competition is more complicated than he imagined - single kick, plate kick, bump, jump kick, three-man pass kick... A variety of very different kicks make the little shuttlecock show a different charm.
In order to prepare for the Horse Cup competition, Shen Tiancheng insisted on practicing hard, and in the month or two before the race, the training intensity was close to two hours a day - the corridor of the C building late at night witnessed his figure practicing alone countless times.
"Insufficient daily calculation, more than enough years", years of hard work and persistence, accumulated a huge progress in the results of the competition. Even in the bumping and jumping events that he only practiced from scratch after entering Tsinghua University, Shen Tiancheng won the Horse Cup championship in 2017 and 2018 with record-breaking results.

The excellent ranking did not stop Shen Tiancheng from moving forward, and year after year, he still insisted on training at night and constantly improved his level. In 2021, Shen Tiancheng participated in the Horse Cup Shuttlecock Competition for the 8th time, winning 4 championships with absolute superiority and breaking 3 school records.
At this point, Shen Tiancheng has become the school record holder for all 5 kicking events in the Horse Cup, winning the championship 23 times and breaking the school record 18 times - 11 of which were originally held by himself.
"Don't break too many records and leave some room for next year." Shen Tiancheng often heard such words during the Horse Cup competition.
He doesn't think so – he knows that after a year of hard work, next year, he can continue to challenge the new record with even stronger strength.
Catch the shuttlecock with your head
As his level progressed, Shen Tiancheng was also exposed to higher-level competitions – in 2019, he signed up for the Chinese Student Shuttlecock Championship, becoming the first athlete in Tsinghua's history to participate in the event.
In order to prepare for the game, he needs to start from scratch again, learning the difficult flower shuttlecock movements such as falling out, double flying swallows, head stopping and stopping - no one can guide, he can only compare the demonstration video, and grope the technical essentials alone in a clumsy attempt.
"How can you catch a shuttlecock with your head?" At a loss, he couldn't help but ask for help from the "almighty circle of friends". Later, he found the answer - after repeated practice, he could catch the shuttlecock with his head.
After active preparation, in the 2019 Chinese Student Shuttlecock Championship, Shen Tiancheng finally won the fourth place in the men's individual kick counting competition of the university group and the second prize (seventh place) in the men's individual prescribed routine competition.
The training provided a new direction and inspired him to persevere and move forward. After two years of polishing, in 2021, Shen Tiancheng once again participated in the Chinese Collegiate Shuttlecock Championship, and won two championships in the Group A Flower Shuttlecock Men's Individual Disc Kick Counting Competition and the Individual Prescribed Routine Competition, writing a new history.
In this regular routine match, Shen Tiancheng failed to "catch the shuttlecock with his head" due to a mistake on the spot - but he still showed excellent standards, and finally scored 2.27 points (out of 10 points) ahead of the second place.
Regrets on the field are inevitable, but all the efforts are worth it in the end.
Learn to explore the sea and climb the peak
In professional learning, Shen Tiancheng has never stopped pursuing excellence and bravely climbing the peak. In the summer of the end of his freshman year, Shen Tiancheng transferred from the Jingyi Department to the Computer Department. In the face of a weak professional foundation and a significantly increased burden of coursework, Shen Tiancheng is still moving forward with his unremitting efforts.
In his sophomore and junior years, he made 60% of his classes in the top 5, and ranked in the top 3 in the three-year overall ranking.
In his sophomore year, Shen Tiancheng was selected for the "Academic Rising Star" program of the Department of Computing. He chose the direction of human-computer interaction and universal computing that interested him. A year later, Shen Tiancheng and his teammates designed and implemented the "HoloLand Interior Design System". This project was selected into the national university students' innovation and entrepreneurship training program and won the second prize of the 35th Challenge Cup of Tsinghua University.
In the professional practice of the third year, Shen Tiancheng chose the special group of "Human-Computer Interaction and Biometrics". After five weeks of immersing himself in research day and night, Shen Tiancheng independently proposed the DNN-FATC model, which improved its performance by more than 3.4% compared with existing methods.
This result result resulted in him receiving the highest score in the whole topic. At the same time, he also wrote a paper on the relevant results and submitted it to AAAI, an international academic conference in the field of artificial intelligence, as the first author.
"Before, there was very little work done independently by undergraduates in our laboratory, and Shen Tiancheng was able to complete the experiment, writing and submission of the paper in less than two months by a single brush, which made many doctoral students sigh." Ma Yihui, who was in the same laboratory as Shen Tiancheng, sighed.

Today, four years have passed since the highlight of his "special award" - in these four years, he continues to write his "special award" story with persistence and love.

From the undergraduate class counselor of the Department of Computer Science, to the deputy director of the Cultural and Sports Department of the Youth League Committee, the deputy director of the Practice Department, and then to the assistant of the moral education work of the graduate students of the Department of Computer Science, Shen Tiancheng silently paid and exerted his talents in different positions, contributing to the growth of his classmates and the construction of campus culture.
