Peace is Zhang Zhizhong's lifelong pursuit. In 1946, Zhang Zhizhong was the director of the northwestern camp and the chairman of Xinjiang Province. During his presidency of Xinjiang Province, General Zhang called for unity and the pursuit of peace. General Zhang Zhizhong said that peace is not weakness. He also said, "I am by no means a weak person, and when the September 18 Incident occurred, I was the most powerful one who advocated the war against Japan." In the twenty-first and twenty-sixth years of the Republic of China, I led a large army to fight against the absolute superiority of the powerful Japanese imperialist army, navy and air force with poor equipment... Is this something that a weak person dares to do? ”

The general's desire for peace and hard work can be seen from this.

Rescued 131 people in Xinjiang and returned to Yan'an

After Zhang Zhizhong took charge of Xinjiang, he maintained close ties with Yan'an.

In the spring of 1946, entrusted by Mr. Zhou of Yan'an, Zhang Zhizhong rescued 131 of our personnel in Xinjiang. Earlier, when Sheng Shicai was in charge of Xinjiang, he arrested the staff sent by our side to Xinjiang. After Zhang Zhizhong concurrently served as the provincial chairman, he made three consecutive proposals to the Nationalist government, demanding the release of 131 of our personnel who were imprisoned by Sheng Shicai. After several twists and turns, his proposal was approved by the National Government. On June 10 of the same year, 131 of our personnel were released and returned to Yan'an from Urumqi.

The 131 people are divided into five categories. The first category is 14 people returned from Moscow, including Yang Zhihua (Qu Qiubai's widow); the second category is 43 people sent to Xinjiang to work; the third category is 31 people who are learning to fly and pilot in Xinjiang; the fourth category is 8 people who are recuperating in Xinjiang; and the fifth category is 35 family members and children in Xinjiang.

In order to ensure the safety of these personnel along the way, Zhang Zhizhong sent Tang Jiangui, the head of the guard, and Liu Yazhe, the head of the transportation department, to escort them. They organized ten trucks, equipped with medical teams, and guards with submachine guns. Not only that, Zhang Zhizhong also gave 131 people a generous travel fee, each with 30,000 French dollars.

Soon, Zhang Wenqiu and her two daughters were also arrested and imprisoned by Sheng Shicai.
