China supported Vietnam in the decades-long "War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Vietnam", and the relationship between China and Vietnam was defined as "comrade and brother", so the Vietnamese people were accustomed to posting the portraits of the leaders of China and Vietnam side by side on the proper door of the house, and in 1976, after the death of Chairman Mao, the portrait of China's leader was changed to President Hua Guofeng, and Vietnam was still Ho Chi Minh.
By the 1970s, when Lê Sun was in power, the country was still destitute, and in order to develop the domestic economy, it was necessary to seek international assistance, at that time, because Sino-Soviet relations had reached a freezing point, in order to please the former Soviet Union and obtain technical and equipment, material and financial support, Lê Sun took the approach of the Soviet Union and alienated China.
Not only that, Vietnam also claimed to be the "third largest military power in the world", constantly provoking China's bottom line, and on the morning of December 8, 1978, the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China officially issued a combat order, saying that "no matter what the results of the battle, our army must not love the war after conquering Gao Binh and Lang Shan, that is, withdraw."
In the early morning of February 17, 1979, Chinese troops gathered on the Sino-Vietnamese border launched a large-scale attack from both directions in Guangxi and Yunnan, and 29 infantry divisions pressed against the Sino-Vietnamese border in an overwhelming manner. By February 26, the important towns of Gao Binh, Dong Deng, and Lao Cai in northern Vietnam had all been conquered, and the People's Liberation Army had penetrated 50 kilometers into Vietnam.
The People's Liberation Army (PLA) was on the offensive, and the Vietnamese army, both in number and firepower, was far inferior to the PLA, but they stubbornly resisted, causing serious casualties to the Chinese army, especially in the Lang Son area, where the Vietnamese army desperately resisted.
Lang Son is one of the most important strategic strongholds in northern Vietnam, it is only 130 kilometers away from the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, as a transportation hub and the gateway city to defend the Vietnamese capital, it can be said that the capture of Lang Son, northern Vietnam will no longer be in danger.
On March 1, the elite 308th Division of the Vietnamese Capital Defense Force came from Hanoi to reinforce Lang Son, this unit once came to China, received the grace of the Chinese 13th Army, not only gave them the best house to live, but also gave them their treasured american weapons, in the training without any compromise, in 1950, the rejuvenated troops returned to Vietnam.
However, at this moment, when the 308th Division of the Vietnamese Army fought against our army in the Battle of Lang Son, it did not have a sense of gratitude, but instead used chemical weapons against our army on a large scale twice when attacking our army, so the commander of the Guangxi front was furious and ordered: "Lang Shan will not leave a single house."
Then, our army's 19 artillery battalions concentrated more than 300 large-caliber artillery to carry out a fierce bombardment of Lang Son City, and within half an hour more than 10,000 shells poured into the Lang Son area of Vietnam.
The Vietnamese army was blown away, and the people and government departments in Hanoi began to flee. By March 5, the last stronghold of Lang Son was conquered by our army, the Battle of Lang Son was completely over, and the Chinese army began to return to China.
However, after the capture of Lang Son, the Chinese People's Liberation Army saw the heads of the leaders of the two countries still posted on the wall in the homes of the Vietnamese people, and everyone was silent.
