Vietnam existed as a county in China before the Song Dynasty, and the "Jiaotong" and "Annam" we have heard are the ancient names for Vietnam. It was not until 968 AD that Vietnam broke away from the rule of the Chinese feudal dynasty and became a country of its own, but it was still a vassal state of China. With such a long history of domination, Vietnam's economy and culture have been profoundly influenced by Confucianism in our country. The Vietnamese used to use Chinese characters and read Confucian classics just like the ancient people of our country.
Later, Vietnam was occupied by France and became a French colony. Under French rule, Vietnam rose up in resistance and the struggle for independence broke out, and it was also during this period that a crucial figure appeared, Ho Chi Minh.
Ho Chi Minh also has a relationship with China, Ho Chi Minh began to secretly rebel against the French ruling forces when he was young, in 1924, he came to Guangzhou under the pseudonym Li Rui, and in 1925 he founded the Vietnamese Youth Revolutionary Comrades Association in Guangzhou. He lived in China for more than twenty years, during which time he not only learned to speak fluent Chinese, but also practiced a beautiful calligraphy and established friendly relations with our country.
On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh won the victory and successfully established the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in Hanoi, and in the following eleven years, he constantly fought against the French colonists, and finally drove the colonists out of Vietnam and preserved the fruits of the revolution, which was indispensable to the military and political support of our country.
But Ho Chi Minh's first act on the throne was to abolish Chinese characters and introduce Chinese characters based on the Roman Latin alphabet as the common script of Vietnam. The Constitution expressly provides:
Only Vietnamese citizens who can read and write Vietnamese script based on the Roman Latin alphabet have the right to stand for election.
Some people can't help but wonder: This little boat of friendship overturned?
In fact, Ho Chi Minh has his own reasons.
First, French colonial rule led to a Han cultural fault in Vietnam
As mentioned earlier, before the Song Dynasty, Vietnam was still a county in China, and later became a vassal state. In 1885, the Qing government, as a defeated country in the Sino-French War, signed the Treaty of Tianjin with France, and Vietnam ceased to be a vassal state of China, and France began to colonize Vietnam. Since then, the Vietnamese people have begun to learn French, and the Chinese language that has been used for thousands of years has since been shelved, and there has been a serious fault in Han culture, and Chinese is no longer the main communication language of the Vietnamese people.
Second, Chinese is difficult to learn
As the essence of China's culture that has been passed down for thousands of years, Chinese is also known as "one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn". Under the seventy years of French colonial rule, Vietnam independently extended a spelling system based on the Latin alphabet and gradually became mainstream. Colonial rule caused a fault in Han culture, Chinese is difficult to learn, coupled with the derivation of a new mainstream writing system, Ho Chi Minh wanted to quickly improve the cultural level of the Vietnamese people,
Under such conditions, it is necessary to choose a more simple and easy-to-learn script to let people get rid of illiteracy as soon as possible
。 As a result, Pinyin's replacement of Chinese characters was quickly promoted.
3. Declare the true independence of the country in words
As the leader of a country, Ho Chi Minh's primary consideration is the national interest, and in the face of national interests, all personal relations must be sidelined. In fact, Vietnam is not the only country that has replaced Chinese characters with indigenous scripts. In ancient times, Japan and Korea also used Chinese characters as the official use of the national script, but due to the changes of the times, after the development of their own scripts, they all had the ambition to abolish Chinese characters together, which is a trend and an inevitable choice for a country. Because for an independently developing country, the written word is the symbol of the national culture, and having its own script and the people learning the same culture is very important for national cohesion. Ho Chi Minh wanted to tell the world that Vietnam was no longer a nation dependent on China or France, but an independent country with its own script.
Based on the above three factors, Vietnam abolished the deep-rooted Chinese characters and chose the new Vietnamese language.
