On February 27, 1979, the most crucial battle of Lang Son in the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam was officially launched, and the Chinese People's Liberation Army organized seven divisions with a total of more than 80,000 people to launch a general attack on the Vietnamese defenders in Lang Son with the momentum of Choi Gu La.
This was the last battle in the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam, and the tragic degree of the scene was called "meat grinder".

Despite the loss of positions, the Vietnamese army still took advantage of the unique terrain of Lang Son, as well as the top of the hill and the high ground to counterattack, and borrowed equipment such as rocket launchers and anti-aircraft machine guns to be condescending, causing a lot of obstacles to our army. The Vietnamese army used chemical weapons against the PLA

After half a day of fierce fighting, the main forces of the 55th Army basically entered the city of Langshan and began to sweep away the remaining enemy forces. However, we did not have that interest, and the PLA had no intention of continuing to march, because at the beginning of the campaign, our purpose was not to invade vietnam, but only to take Lang Son and withdraw its troops when it reached its predetermined strategic objectives.
On March 5, 1979, the Chinese government announced to the world: "Since February 17, the Chinese border defense forces have been forced to return fire in self-defense and have now achieved their intended purpose." Since March 5, 1979, all Chinese border troops have been withdrawn to China. ”

Finally, the 55th Army withdrew from the Youyiguan and Beishan areas in an orderly manner around March 11, and until March 12, the 55th Army was successfully withdrawn. From February 17 to March 16, 1979, although the Chinese army achieved the goal of annihilating more than 100,000 Vietnamese troops, it achieved the expected strategic objectives of the Vietnam War. But it also paid a heavy price, with PLA fighters sacrificing more than 6,000 and injuring 14,000.
