Many years ago, I read a passage from Uncle Li who became a monk in Hangzhou.
The willows by the West Lake and the water waves are flowing, and there is no more suitable farewell scene than the West Lake. In the spring of 1918, a Japanese woman and her friend searched the temples of Hangzhou and finally found her ordained husband in a temple called "Tiger Run".
The 38-year-old was originally a teacher at the Zhejiang Provincial First Normal School on the other side of the West Lake, and recently resigned from the school to become a monk here. Ten years ago, he met his wife while studying in Japan, and has experienced many gatherings and separations since then, but this time it is the final farewell, and her husband decides to leave the bustling world and convert to Buddhism.
Several people ate a relatively wordless vegetarian meal at the Lakeside Vegetarian Restaurant in front of Yue Temple. The husband handed the watch to his wife as a parting commemoration, comforting her, "You have the technology, you will not lose your job when you go back to Japan." The people on the shore looked at the drifting boat and wept bitterly, and the people on the boat did not even turn their heads back once.
This poor Japanese woman may not understand to the death why her husband is so weak and widowed... Yeah, what could be more cruel and heartbreaking than this scene? I read this and cried loudly, tears like rain.
At that time, I was still very young, and I gritted my teeth in hatred for the world's most talented man, Li Shutong, and regarded him as the thinnest and most selfish man in the world. His talents turned into smoke in my mind. Since then, there is no one in the world who can compose poetry, fill in words, calligraphy, painting, seal carving, music, acting... Li Shutong, there is only one generation of famous monks Hongyi Master!
A few years later, I read a letter from Li Shutong to his Japanese wife before leaving home:
Makoto:
Regarding my decision to become a monk, I have made it clear to the people concerned in all matters around me. I talked to you last time, and I think you already know that my renunciation is just a matter of sooner or later. After some time of thinking, can you understand my decision? If you have given me permission to do so, please write to me and tell me that your decision is very important to me.
For you, it is hard to accept the pain and despair of losing someone with whom you have a deep relationship, and I understand that. But you are extraordinary, please swallow this bitter wine, and then hold on to live a life, I think you are not inhabited by a vulgar, cowardly soul. May the Ferienwohnung help you through these difficult days.
To make such a decision, it is not my lack of righteousness, I must let go of everything for the more eternal and difficult journey of the Buddhist path. I let go of you, and I let go of the fame and wealth that I have accumulated in the world. These are all over the place and not worth nostalgic for.
What we want to build is the glorious Buddha's kingdom in the future, and in the Western Heavens AndLand of Infinity, let's meet again.
In order not to increase your suffering, I will not go back to Shanghai. Everything in our home is at your disposal and as a memorial. Life is short for decades, the limit is always coming, now it is just to advance it, we are going to separate sooner or later, may you see through.
Before the Buddha, I pray that the Buddha's light will bless you. I hope you cherish it and recite the name of the Buddha.
Shu Tong Peng Noon July 1st
In 1918, on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, Li Shutong officially took refuge in Buddhism. A few weeks after his shaving, his Japanese wife, the Japanese lady with whom he had a crush on her, was heartbroken and took her young son from Shanghai to Hangzhou, holding on to the last glimmer of hope, persuading her husband not to abandon her and leave the family. This year is the 11th year after the two have known each other. However, Shu Tong's determination was already determined, and even the temple gate did not let his wife and children enter, and his wife had no choice but to leave, but only sadly rebuked the closed door: "Mercy to the world, why do you hurt me alone?" "His wife, knowing that she could not regain her husband's heart, wanted to meet him one last time. In the early morning, the mist of the West Lake, two boats facing each other. Li Shutong's Japanese wife: "Shu Tong—" Li Shu tong: "Please call me Hongyi." Wife: "Master Koichi, please tell me what love is?" Li Shutong: "Love is compassion."
I am glad that I read this letter after I believed in Buddhism and studied Buddhism. In other words, I was absolutely incomprehensible and unforgivable. Reading it now, although there are tears in my eyes, my heart is warm. After many years, I finally realized the "sentientity" of Master Hirohito. Where is he "ruthless", and is it clear that "the Tao is ruthless but sentient"?
For many years, in my mind, Li Shutong was the image of the monk in Hangzhou who was determined, cold, saw through the red dust, and his heart was like ashes. For many years, I have also seen taking refuge in Buddhism as an irresponsible form of self-refuge.
However, this is not the case. Before leaving home, he set aside three months' salary and divided it into three parts, one of which was transferred to his Japanese wife, along with a self-cut beard to his old friend Mr. Yang Baimin, and asked her to send her back to Japan. From this detail, we can see the tenderness and regret in Master Hongyi's heart, as well as the care and thoughtfulness of his handling.
It is said that the news of Li Shutong's ordination caused a sensation and speculation at that time. Most of the world can not understand, the most incomprehensible is that those readers who are moved by his poetry, especially those sentimental female readers, lose their sustenance for a while, which can be described as painful. There was a female reader who fell in love with Li Shutong with a dead heart, and after he shaved his head, she came to the temple every day to find him and beg him to return to his customs. How did Master Hongyi deal with this? He sent someone to give the woman a poem, which included two sentences: "Return the king to a bowl of merciless tears, hate not to meet when they are not shaved." ”
How gentle and merciful! Instead of blaming the woman for disturbing Qingxiu, he said to the woman in a very regretful tone: It is not that I refuse to accept you, but that we met too late, and there is no fate in this life, only that I am ruthless to you. We can be sure that after reading the poem, the woman must have some understanding, mixed feelings, even if she is not willing, she can only admit her fate. In fact, she also left crying, no longer bothering Master Hongyi.
As for why Li Shutong wanted to go out of the family, when I was young, I would be puzzled and keep asking. Now, I don't even think it's superfluous to ask. Reading the letter he wrote to his wife, you couldn't have understood better.
His student Feng Zikai once explained: How did he sublimate from art to religion? At that time, everyone was surprised, thinking that Mr. Li had been stimulated by something, and suddenly "escaped into the empty door". But I could understand his heart, and I thought his renunciation was of course. I think that human life can be divided into three layers: one is material life, the other is spiritual life, and the third is soul life.
Material life is food and clothing. Spiritual life is academic literature. The life of the soul is religion. "Life" is such a three-story building. Those who are too lazy (or powerless) to take the stairs live on the first floor, that is, they make the material life very good, they are clothed and eaten, honored and rich, filial piety and kindness, and so they are satisfied. This is also a view of life. People who hold such a view of life are the majority in the world.
Second, those who are happy (or powerful) to take the stairs will climb up to the second floor to play, or stay in it for a long time. This is the person who concentrates on academic literature and art. They devote their full efforts to the study of learning and to the creation and appreciation of literature and art. There are also many such people in the world, namely the so-called "intellectuals", "scholars", "artists". There is also a kind of person, "life desire" is very strong, the foot strength is very large, the second floor is not satisfied, then take the stairs, climb the three floors. This is the religious.
They are very serious about their lives, and it is not enough to satisfy their "material desires", it is not enough to satisfy their "spiritual desires", and they must explore the end of life. They think that the children and grandchildren of property are all external things, academic literature and art are temporary beauty, and even their own bodies are illusory existences. They refuse to be slaves to instinct, and must investigate the source of the soul, the root of the universe, in order to satisfy their "desire for life." This is the religious. There are only these three kinds of people in the world.
Although I use the analogy of three floors, it is not necessary to go from the first floor to the second floor and then get the third floor. There are many people who go straight from the first layer to the third layer and don't need to stay in the second layer. Many people did not even live on the first floor and ran up three floors in one go. However, our Master Hongyi walked up layer by layer. Master Koichi's "desire for life" is very strong! As a person, he must do it thoroughly. In his early years, he fulfilled his filial piety to his mother, loved his wife, and lived on the first floor. The middle-aged man who concentrated on the study of art and exerted his multi-faceted genius moved to the second floor. The strong "desire for life" could not satisfy him with the second floor, so he climbed up to the third floor, became a monk, cultivated the Pure Land, and studied the precepts, which was of course, and it was not surprising.
Being a person is like drinking; the amount of alcohol is small, drinking a glass of flower carving wine is already drunk, the amount of wine is large, drinking flower carving is too light, you must drink sorghum wine to enjoy. Literature and art are like flower carvings, and religion is like sorghum. Master Hongyi has a lot of wine, and drinking flower carvings cannot be enjoyed, but must drink sorghum. I drank very little, I could only drink flower carvings, and it was rare to drink a sip of sorghum. But those who drink flower sculptures can understand the heart of those who drink sorghum. Therefore, I have always thought that master Hongyi's sublimation from art to religion is of course not surprising. The highest point of art is close to religion. The last culmination of the two-story escalator is the third floor, so it is inevitable that Master Koichi will sublimate from art to religion.
Feng Zikai's "three floors of life" theory sweeps away the world's speculations about the bankruptcy theory, the theory of reclusiveness, the theory of disillusionment, the theory of lost love, the theory of frustration in political circles, and so on, which are realistic and inspiring. I think Feng Zikai should know his teacher best.
With my ordinary eyes, I will not be able to comprehend master Hongyi's Daoist heart and realm for the rest of my life.
Lin Yutang said: "He once belonged to our era, but he finally abandoned this era and jumped out of the red dust." ”
Zhang Ailing said, "Don't think I'm an arrogant person, I've never been—at least, outside the walls of Master Hongyi's monastery, I'm so humble." ”
Zhao Pu initially commented that he was "an endless treasure for the eyes of the world, a full moon shining on the heart of heaven".
In fact, he didn't want to be a rare treasure and a bright moon, he was just for his own heart. He did not become the eleventh patriarch of the Vinaya, nor did he become the "Four Great Monks of the Republic of China" along with Void Cloud, Tai Void, and Yin Guang. Abandoning the family and destroying the karma is not for this, and it is needless to say that the great enlightenment is great. Those false names, he did not want. The real him, 63 years of flow, 39 years of the world, 24 years of Buddha, strict obedience to the precepts, self-discipline, transmission of the scriptures and zen, universality of sentient beings, but self-proclaimed "two one old man": nothing adults grow old, not worth much to say.
When Master Koichi passed away, there were two small things that made people think deeply. First, the post of "intersection of sorrow and joy" written on the eve of his death, whether it is this sentence itself or the ink treasure he wrote, makes people see the good state of mind of a high monk in front of the gate of life and death, which is both sad and happy, and intriguing. Second, he instructed his disciples to remember to put a bowl of clean water under the shelf of the altar of ashes after cremation, so as not to burn the insects and ants passing by. It is not surprising to pity the lives of the ants when you are alive, this is a general requirement for cultivators, but when you are dying, you still have to worry about not hurting the beings in the world, and the delicacy of this mind is not true for those who have great compassion and compassion, and it is really respected by the world!
There is such a scene in the movie "A Round of Bright Moon": in the early morning, the mist of the West Lake, two boats facing each other. Yukiko: "Shu Tong—" Li Shu Tong: "Please call me Hongyi." Yukiko: "Master Koichi, please tell me what love is?" Li Shutong: "Love is compassion." ”
Because you understand, you are compassionate.
Love is compassion.
