Li Shutong was born in 1880 in Tianjin to a family of rich merchants. Temperamental and mellow, he traveled to Japan at the age of 26 to study. Poetry and song are given to music, golden stone seal engraving and calligraphy, and Danqing literature and drama are all involved and have long been famous.

A song "Farewell" spread throughout the country and was recognized as a great talent, scholar and artist. The Xiamen Sixth Middle School Choir once performed this famous song on the stage of CCTV.
After Li Shutong returned to China, he served as a teacher at the Zhejiang Provincial First Normal School, the originator of Chinese oil painting, the pioneer of modern song history, and the founder of Chinese drama, and his calligraphy and seal engraving also achieved extraordinary achievements.

After taking refuge in Buddhism, Master Hongyi spent a total of 14 years in the southern Fujian region, and came to Xiamen ten times successively, living in Nanputuo, Taipingyan, Wanshouyan, Miaoshi Temple, Wanshiyan Temple, Gulangyu Island Sunlight Rock, and Idle Villa.

On May 26, 1936, Master Hongyi came to the Retreat of Sunlight Rock Temple on Gulangyu Island, immersed himself in writing, retreated to cultivation, and read the Buddha and introspected.

At Nikko-iwa Temple, he wrote several biographies and completed three sutras: the Vajrapani Prajnaparamita Sutra, the Amitabha Sutra, and the Medicine Master Hongan Merit Sutra.

In 2008, in order to commemorate the relationship between Master Koichi and Nikko-iwa-ji Temple, the "Koichi Master Memorial Garden" was built, which was built on a high platform on the west side of the temple, and there is a statue of the master in the garden.

In his later years, Master Hongyi gave himself a name, called "Eryi Old Man". "I often reflect on myself, feeling that my virtue is really lacking... I remember that the ancients had a poem that said that nothing is getting older than adults, and that a penny is not worth saying, so I use it to make my own name."
Before his death, Master Hongyi wrote an appendix to the "Testament" to his friend Xia Junzun and his disciple Liu Zhiping.
