The hydrogen BMW Arctic Circle has completed testing and is put into small-scale production in the second half of this year

Upstream news According to the official information of BMW Group, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen hydrogen fuel cell vehicle recently underwent a harsh extreme cold endurance test at the BMW Group Winter Test Center in Arjeplug, Sweden. In extremely low temperatures, the overall functionality of hydrogen fuel cell drive systems, chassis technology and electronic and electrical systems is tested and validated to ensure that vehicles can achieve zero-emission driving pleasure while bringing customers extraordinary athletic performance and a comfortable driving experience. At present, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has entered the late stage of research and development before mass production, and the small-scale production model will be put into production in the second half of 2022.

What is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle?

Hydrogen fuel cell refers to the device where hydrogen generates electrical energy through a chemical reaction with oxygen, and the driving force of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles comes from the electric motor on the car (just like pure electric vehicles), so the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle can be understood as an "electric vehicle with its own hydrogen fuel generator". It can be said that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are a useful supplement for traditional internal combustion engine models, plug-in hybrid models and pure electric vehicle models. As a new green and sustainable mobility solution, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will help further achieve carbon emission reduction goals.

Achieve a maximum cruising range of 500 km in extreme cold environments, and fill the hydrogen storage tank in only 3-4 minutes

In extreme cold environments, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen is capable of driving up to a maximum range of approximately 500 km. The hydrogen storage tank takes only 3-4 minutes to fill, and it is not affected in the cold winter. Julgen Guldner, Head of the HYDROGEN Fuel Cell Technology and Automotive Project at the BMW Group, said: "Hydrogen fuel cell drive systems combine the advantages of both drive systems and are not affected by seasonal variations and outdoor temperatures. It can not only achieve zero-emission travel of pure electric models, but also feel the same as fuel vehicles in terms of use, and long-distance driving only needs a short stay to be full of fuel. ”

It is understood that the drive system equipped with the BMW iX5 Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle integrates hydrogen fuel cell technology and the fifth generation bmw eDrive electric drive technology. The hydrogen needed to supply the fuel cell is stored in two 700 bar pressure tanks made of carbon fiber reinforced composites, which chemically react with oxygen to provide up to 125 kilowatts (170 hp) of electrical energy to the rear axle-mounted electric motors. In addition, the high-power battery located above the motor can not only be charged by the fuel cell, but also use the electricity generated by the braking energy recovery system. When overtaking or accelerating, the battery injects extra power into the vehicle, and the system outputs a total of 275 kW (374 hp).
