11.5% increase in UK used car sales in 2021 The Ford Fiesta is the most popular

【Smart Car Pie News】Due to the tight supply of new cars caused by the epidemic, used cars in the global market are very popular. Uk used car sales grew by 11.5% in 2021 due to a shortage of new car supplies due to a global semiconductor shortage, according to the Uk's Association of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

A total of 7530956 used cars were sold in the UK last year, up from 6752959 in 2020, but still 5.5% below the five-year average before the pandemic. The Ford Fiesta was the best-selling used car, trading at 326346, followed by Vauxhall Corsa (262488) and Volkswagen Golf (251265).

Demand for electric vehicles has reached record levels. Sales of all-electric vehicles (BEVs) increased 119.2% to 40,228 units, while sales of used plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rose 75.6% to 56,861 units, and hybrid vehicles rose 50.3% to 137639 units, also setting a new high. Overall, low-emission vehicles account for 3.1 percent of the market share, which SMMT said is due to "more and more ultra-low-emission and zero-emission models entering the used car market."

However, even as demand for electric models hit a record high, sales of used gasoline and diesel models rose by 10.7% and 9.8%, respectively, accounting for 96.6% of total sales, with a transaction volume of 7277291 units.

"It's great to see the used car market back to growth, even though activity is still below pre-pandemic levels," smMT CEO Mike Hoth said. "The demand for individual mobility has undoubtedly increased during the pandemic, so if we are to improve air quality and combat climate change, we must have healthy new car sales to drive fleet renewal and used car markets"

Mini cars are the most popular models in the used car market, with a share of 32.7%, followed by low- and medium-sized cars (26.4%) and dual-purpose vehicles (13.2%). SMMT said the number of transactions increased across all segments, with demand for dual-use vehicles increasing the most, at 18.3 percent, with nearly 1 million in volume.
