Recent sales tracking of new energy vehicles in Europe: Tesla took the opportunity to attack the city and | Principal Zhu's column

Today's article mainly sorts out the sales of new energy vehicles in major European countries (markets) in March and the first quarter. With the soaring energy prices in Europe, especially fuel prices, the promotion of new energy vehicles in Europe has achieved a solid foundation. Among the major countries, Germany, the United Kingdom and France achieved sales figures of 61,760, 55,350 and 31,530 respectively in March, while Sweden, Norway, Italy and the Netherlands also broke through 10,000 – gradually rising in March with quarterly sales. Overall, Europe has increased its penetration under the previous subsidy promotion, and as fuel prices have soared, it has actually built its own sustainability in the direction of marketization in a new round.

Part 1: Tracking of new energy vehicle sales in major European countries

I pulled out the sales of new energy vehicles in major European countries in Q1 this year and Q1 last year, and I can see that under the premise of the sharp increase in Europe's Q1 year-on-year, the data in the UK in March hit a record high and began to approach Sales in Germany. That is to say, There is a similar situation in Europe and China, and the sales of new energy vehicles are not in accordance with the year-on-year (regular growth) from a quarterly point of view, but the inertia of each quarter, which generally occurs under the model of sudden penetration rate and high growth.

Remarks: The general new energy vehicles (quarterly sales) are low and high, with each band superimposed, this year's demand for new energy vehicles in Europe is still very exciting, of course, it also depends on whether the European side continues to increase prices.

If we take the sales volume of several major markets in Europe into disassemble, the top three markets in Germany, the United Kingdom and France, the market penetration rate of pure electric vehicles is 1.61%, 14.3% and 13.5%, respectively, which are quite stable. In three countries, we look at the comparison of heV and PHEV penetration.

Germany - PHEV 11.31%, HEV 20.07%

UK - PHEV 6.59%, HEV 29.58%

France - PHEV 7.9%, HEV 18.9%

In a relatively large market, hybrid and plug-in hybrid are still a mainstream transition choice. The situation is similar in the Italian and Spanish markets, where BEV penetration is only 3.71% and 5.19%, respectively.

Italy - PHEV 5.11%, HEV 32.5%

Spain - PHEV 5.56%, HEV 27.55%

In the relatively small market, the transition is relatively easy, Norway has achieved 86.1% penetration of pure electric vehicles, Sweden pure electric penetration rate of 31.8%, PHEV's 23.7% penetration rate is followed by subsidies.

If you look at it from the volume point of view, from January to March this year, the UK's BEV increase was the largest, suddenly rushing to 39,300 units, surpassing Germany to become the largest BEV market in Europe in a single month. From January to March, the growth rate of the PHEV market was relatively flat.

Part 2: Specific sales models and Tesla situations

From the perspective of specific models, with Tesla's delivery in Europe (the German factory began to deliver the first Model Y in late March), Tesla is in a very leading position in many markets, delivering 3303 Model Y and 1694 Model 3 in Norway in March; 3882 Model 3 in France, 1365 Model Y in Sweden, and 792 Model 3 in Spain, basically opening the gap with other pure electric models.

If you look at Tesla Q1 sales in Europe alone —

Germany - 14408 units

UK - 15,547 units (Model 3 and Model Y 7,773 and 7,774 respectively, ranked 6th and 7th in the BEST-selling list of all models in the UK)

France - 8481 units

Norway - 5098 units

Tesla Q1 mainly prioritizes delivering these larger markets.

From the year-on-year growth rate of Q1, as shown below, it is basically above 100%. With the Local Production in Europe at the Berlin plant, Tesla's delivery speed in Europe will no longer depend on the U.S. and Shanghai factories, which is very positive for Tesla to expand its market size in Europe.

From the perspective of the overall European automobile industry, it is actually in a very weak period. Whether it's the wiring harness factories in Ukraine (affected by the war), the continued shortage of various chips, or the increase in manufacturing costs due to large fluctuations in energy prices, Tesla hit Europe at this time, coupled with high oil prices as a basis for expectations, it is indeed a bit of "doing the right thing at the right point in time".
