Today's article mainly sorts out the sales of new energy vehicles in major European countries. With energy and fuel prices soaring in Europe, the promotion of new energy vehicles in Europe has achieved a solid foundation. The major countries Of Germany, the United Kingdom and France achieved figures of 61,760, 55,350 and 31,530 respectively, while Sweden, Norway, Italy and the Netherlands all exceeded 10,000 and gradually rose in March with quarterly sales. Overall, Europe has increased its penetration under the previous subsidy promotion, and as fuel prices soar, it is actually building its own sustainability in the direction of marketization in a new round.

Part 1 Overview of key countries

I pulled out the sales of new energy vehicles in major countries for six months, and under the premise that Europe's Q1 rose sharply year-on-year, we can see that the uk's March data is a record high and begins to approach Germany's sales. That is to say, There is a similar situation in Europe and China, and new energy vehicles are not based on the year-on-year view from a quarterly point of view, but continue the inertia of each quarter, which generally occurs under the model of sudden penetration and high growth.

Remarks: Generally new energy vehicles are low before and after high, with each band superimposed, this year's demand for new energy vehicles in Europe is still very much looking forward to, of course, it also depends on whether the European side continues to increase prices.

Figure 2. Comparison of Q1 2022 and Q1 2021

If we look at the sales volume of several markets in Europe, the top three markets are Germany, the United Kingdom and France, and the market penetration rate of pure electric vehicles is quite stable at 1.61%, 14.3% and 13.5% respectively. In three countries, we look at the comparison of heV and PHEV penetration.

●German PHEV 11.31%, HEV 20.07%

●UK PHEV 6.59%, HEV 29.58%

●French PHEV 7.9%, HEV 18.9%

In the relatively large market, hybrid and plug-in hybrid is still a mainstream transition choice. It is also similar in the Italian and Spanish markets, where beV penetration is only 3.71% and 5.19%.

●Italy PHEV 5.11%, HEV 32.5%

●Spanish PHEV 5.56%, HEV 27.55%

In the relatively small market, the transition is relatively easy, Norway has achieved 86.1% of the penetration of pure electricity, Sweden's situation is 31.8% penetration of pure electricity, PHEV 23.7% is following the subsidy.

Figure 3. The situation of total sales volume and penetration rate in European countries

If you look at it from the volume point of view, from January to March, mainly the United Kingdom's BEV increase was the largest, suddenly rushing to 39,300 units, surpassing Germany to become the largest BEV market in Europe in a single month. From January to March, the market growth of PHEV was relatively flat.

Part 2 sells models and Tesla's case

From the perspective of specific models, with the delivery of Tesla in Europe, Tesla is in a very leading position in many markets, delivering 3303 Models Y and 1694 Model 3s in Norway in a single month in March; 3882 Model 3s in France, 1365 Model Y in Sweden, and 792 Model 3s in Spain, basically opening up the gap with other pure electricity.

If you look at Tesla's sales in Europe Q1 separately,

●Germany 14408 units

● 15,547 units in the UK (Model 3 and Model Y 7773 and 7774 respectively, ranking 6th and 7th in the BEST SELLER LIST of all models in the UK)

●France 8481 units

Tesla Q1 mainly prioritizes delivering these larger markets.

Figure 6. Comparison of Tesla sales in major European countries in Q1 2022 and Q1 in 2021

From the year-on-year growth rate of Q1, as shown below, it is basically above 100%. With the Berlin factory in Europe to achieve local production, Tesla's delivery speed in Europe will not depend on the United States and Shanghai factories, which is very positive for Europe to expand the market size.

Figure 7. Tesla's growth in major European countries in Q1 2022 (year-on-year)

Summary: From the perspective of the overall automobile industry in Europe, it is actually in a very weak period. Whether it's the wire harness factories in Ukraine, the shortage of various chips or the cost of manufacturing due to energy prices. At this time, Tesla hit Europe, coupled with high oil prices as the basis of expectations, there is indeed a sense of doing the right thing at the right time.
