So how did Geely come up with such an advanced hybrid system in such a short period of time?
In 2019, Geely's Corun bought the patent of THS hybrid technology for 1 yuan, and many people expect that with the blessing of THS, Corun and Geely can quickly let Ji use the hybrid system.
But in fact, as early as 2014, Corun was already a supplier of Toyota's THS hybrid system. They mainly provide NiMH batteries for Toyota, and NiMH batteries are one of the main core components of THS, and Corun has accumulated a certain technical foundation by providing this core component for Toyota.
At that time, Corunyuan also worked with Geely to independently develop CHS hybrid technology. This technology was first installed on the Emgrand PHEV model at that time.
Unlike other "oil-modified" PHEV models, the structure of the CHS hybrid system is very similar to THS, and it is still the planetary gear as the core power shunt component, the No. 1 motor is mainly connected to the sun wheel for engine starting and power generation, and the No. 2 motor is connected with the ring gear and the wheel, mainly for driving the wheel and kinetic energy recovery. The engine is, of course, also connected to the planetary frame.
However, compared to THS, CHS adds a set of clutches that lock the sun wheel and Motor 1, so CHS adds a pure fuel drive mode. But CHS's larger battery packs can negatively impact fuel consumption when power is lost. Measured results show that the THS-equipped Leiling Dual Engine consumes 4.2L of fuel per 100 kilometers, while the Emgrand PHEV equipped with CHS consumes 4.9L.
Of course, you can think that CHS is more advanced than THS in terms of structure and principle, but the cost of CHS is still very high. The Emgrand PHEV model of that year started at more than 160,000 yuan, which was much higher than the Leiling dual engine of the same level. Changes in national fuel consumption test standards and consumer demand for efficient hybrid systems have made the emergence of Thor a natural one.
