The concept of Shanghainese in a narrow sense generally refers to the people who lived in the inner ring and their descendants from the opening of the port in 1843 to the liberation in 1949. Most of these people came from all over the country and jointly built and developed greater Shanghai.
Locals generally refer to the people on the outskirts of Shanghai, such as Nanhui, Chuansha, Songjiang, Qingpu, Jiading, Chongming and other places. Some people will say that they are authentic Shanghainese and the roots of Shanghai, which is not right or right.
In fact, these areas used to belong to Jiangsu, and in 1958, in order to develop Shanghai, the central government assigned 10 counties of Jiangsu to Shanghai. So in the strict sense, they are Songjiang natives, Jiading natives, Pudong natives ~ including the residents of these places who come to the city now say that they are going to Shanghai. But now these places belong to Shanghai, they all have some longer history than the city, and it is not wrong to call Songjiang the root of Shanghai.
New Shanghainese are easy to understand, generally after the reform and opening up of Shanghai in 1989, the national elite talents settled in Shanghai.
