Everyone has a Shanghai in their hearts. The Bund, Nanjing Road, Lujiazui, "Wutong District", Wukang Building... Different cross-sections form a vivid and three-dimensional "magic capital".
What is less well known is that on the Huangpu River, which flows through the downtown area of Shanghai, there is also a small island called Fuxing Island, which is located in yangpu district. There are no high-rise buildings on the island, more warehouses, docks; no traffic, "slow" almost like in Shanghai; no "cement forest", but there is a large real forest... However, it is these "atypical" labels that have made Fuxing Island become an "internet celebrity" in recent years, making the image of "Magic Capital" more plump.
Fuxing Island's "out of the circle" let people see that Shanghai, which is good at "making a dojo in a snail shell", not only has the ability to focus on the immediate and make careful calculations, but also has the generosity and insight of taking a long-term view and daring to "leave blank".
Only 1 square kilometer in the early head
From the Dinghai Road Bridge in the south to the mouth of the Qiujiang River in the north, from the air, Fuxing Island looks like a crooked crescent. As the only enclosed inland island in the Huangpu River, Fuxing Island is about 3.42 kilometers long and covers an area of about 1.133 square kilometers, and it takes less than an hour to walk around the island.
Although the area is not large, there are many stories. Originally, it was just a shoal on the Huangpu River near Zhoujiazui Village, known as "Zhoujiazui Sha". In 1905, the Qing government formally established the Shanghai General Bureau of Junpu Engineering and began to dredge the waterway of the Huangpu River, and from 1925 to 1934, the beach of Zhoujiazuisha was massively blown into the land. In 1927, the Junpu Bureau bought this beach land from the government for 400,000 taels of silver, which was once called Zhoujiazui Island and Dinghai Island. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, in 1946, the island was renamed Fuxing Island, which is still in use today.
Today, there are no commercial houses on Fuxing Island, but as part of Shanghai's old industrial base, there are still many pharmaceutical, shipbuilding, logistics and marine fishery enterprises. Walk south to north along the island's main thoroughfare, the Gongqing Road, with occasional logistics trucks passing by and local residents walking slowly. On both sides of the road, in addition to the towering trees, there are mostly "elderly" factories or warehouses, and their mottled walls tell the story of time.
Walking into a convenience store, all kinds of cold drinks, food seasonings, tobacco and alcohol groceries are somewhat crowded on the shelves, not as orderly as the popular brand convenience stores, but chaotic and orderly, highlighting a different kind of fireworks and human touch.
As one of only two convenience stores on the island, Haizhen Convenience Store has in a sense become a silent "field observer" on Fuxing Island. Wu Liangzhen, the owner, said that 40 years ago, she followed her husband to the island to work, and after retiring, she opened the shop, and now it has been 16 years. In recent years, although there has been no great development in commerce and industry on the island, it is gratifying to see the opening of Metro Line 12 and the establishment of Fuxing Island Station in 2013, and the continuous optimization of bus lines.
"I heard that the government regards Fuxing Island as a 'blank space' in the urban area, and I think it is very good." Wu Liangzhen said that after living most of his life, he sometimes felt that slowing down was the true meaning of life.
Island slow life
If Fuxing Island is the last secret place in Shanghai, then the Fuxing Island Park in the middle of the island can be called "the secret place of the secret place".
Walking south along the secluded Gongqing Road from the north of the island, before you can see the park gate, you can hear the melodious sound of saxophones coming from afar. Aunt Yin, who lives on the nearby Congjiang Road street, said it was the daily playing time of nearby residents in Fuxing Island Park.
Walking into the park, the yellowing leaves dance with the wind, the bright red holly hangs on the branches, and the lush green grass forgets the seasonal growth... At 3 p.m., Dongyang tirelessly replenished people with heat, and a black and white flower cat squatted lazily in the middle of the road, providing free "cat picking" benefits for pedestrians passing by.
As a new "net red" in the shanghai park tourism industry, Fuxing Island Park has become more and more "out of the circle" in recent years, many young people have come to take wedding photos, and many tourists have come from other places, and the average number of daily visitors to the park has doubled.
"The rhythm is soothing, life is idyllic, it's a paradise." Aunt Yin enthusiastically became a tour guide, pointed to several camphor trees in the middle of the park, saying that those were all elderly, about 100 years old, and pointed to the large area of moss next to the lawn, saying that only if the ecological environment reached a certain standard, the moss would grow so well.
Not only do the trees in the park have a history, but the park itself has many origins. Zhu Jing, head of the organization section of the Shanghai Yangpu District Greening and City Appearance Management Bureau, introduced that in the 1930s, the General Bureau of Engineering of Junpu built a staff club garden on the island, named the Junpu Bureau Sports Club, which is the original origin of today's Fuxing Island Park. After the liberation of Shanghai, it was renovated and opened to the public on May 28, 1951, named Fuxing Island Park.
Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture, once said that the park is a work of art, and with the accumulation of time, the park will be increasingly injected with cultural heritage. From this point of view, today's Fuxing Island Park can undoubtedly be called a cultural footnote to Fuxing Island and even Shanghai.
A living case of "Riverside Party Building"
Walking into Fuxing Island Park, a small building stands out. Looking closely, it is a white-walled red-roofed octagonal pavilion and cottage with the word "Bailu" written on the wall, next to the words "Fuxing Island Park Party Group Service Station".
Here, it is the first year-round party and mass service station in Shanghai. On June 27, 2021, Yangpu District used it as the ninth party and group service station in Binjiang, renovated it, and introduced social organization operation, which gave new vitality to this outstanding historical building in Shanghai.
In recent years, Shanghai has taken the "Binjiang Party Building" as the guide, vigorously penetrated the "one river and one river" shoreline of the Huangpu River and Suzhou River, and left the best resources to the people. The Fuxing Island Park Party Group Service Station came into being in this context.
This is a party service station that is busier than expected. "It's going to be the Spring Festival soon, and I'm going to learn photography quickly, and when the time comes, I'll be amazed at the Chinese New Year's Eve dinner." Uncle Zhou, who lives nearby, is 70 years old and attends photography classes here every week, and he now not only has a good grasp of the light and angle when taking pictures, but also has a good level of retouching.
"The main reason why we can attract people is that our activities are very targeted, for example, there is no cinema on the island, we launch the island screening hall; there is no hospital on the island, we have jointly built through party building, joint two hospitals, and launched the 'health service doctor + doctor' activity brand." Li Changshu, head of operation of the Party Group Service Station in Fuxing Island Park, said.
In Zhu Jing's view, attracting people and enriching their lives not only contributes to their physical and mental health, but also is an important measure to practice the concept of the people's city. It is precisely because of the laughter and laughter of the people that Fuxing Island Park has the significance of existence.
Parks are important to a city. The famous writer Shi Tiesheng likes to visit the park alone. He once said that in the calm light that filled the garden, it was easier for a person to see time and see his own figure.
When it comes to visiting the park, people around the world have reached a high degree of agreement. Indeed, in today's accelerating social rhythm, coming outside, whether it is listening to the wind, listening to birds, watching flowers, or having a picnic, playing the violin, dancing square dance, or meditating on history and exchanging photography experiences, is a thing of "Shin-Cola".
In the process of more prosperous people and continuous revitalization of history, Fuxing Island also records the history and culture of Shanghai in its own way, connecting the past and future of the city.
