Shell's largest green hydrogen project was put into production in China to help the Green Winter Olympics

On January 28, one of the world's largest hydrogen electrolysis and hydrogen production units was launched in The Zhangjiakou Green Hydrogen Energy Integration Demonstration Base Project in Hebei Province, and began to produce green hydrogen. The project will provide about 50% of the green hydrogen supply for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Zhangjiakou during the Winter Olympics, which opens on February 4, 2022.

The project was constructed by a joint venture between Shell (China) Co., Ltd. and Zhangjiakou Transportation Construction Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd.

The joint venture, announced in November 2020, includes investment in the construction of a 20,000-kilowatt renewable energy hydrolyzed water production and hydrogenation project in Zhangjiakou, while the second phase of the project aims to expand production capacity to 60,000 kilowatts over the next two years. As Shell's first commercial hydrogen project in China, it took only 13 months to complete.

The project, which uses electricity generated by onshore wind, will initially supply green hydrogen to more than 600 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Zhangjiakou during the Winter Olympics. The hydrogen produced by the project will then be used to supply public and commercial transport use in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, helping to decarbonise the region's transportation sector.
