Hello everyone! I am Chen Jie
I once saw a paragraph on the second-hand car forum: the tears of regret when selling a car are all the water in my brain when buying a car. Although it is a paragraph, it shows the pain and sourness of the flesh when selling the car.
Nowadays, very few people will drive a car to scrapping, so the retention rate is crucial. When you don't sell a car, you may only think that it is a number, but when you actually sell a car, it is real money.
Moreover, the retention rate is also a reflection of the comprehensive quality of a vehicle, including quality, reliability, fuel consumption, and even the degree of decay of the vehicle condition. Even if we don't plan to sell a car, the retention rate can be used as a reference for us to buy a car.
Recently, the China Automobile Dealers Association released the 2021 retention rate report, let's take a look at which brands and which models have the most value.
What type of car has the most value?
The difference in the retention rate of different levels of models, we have paid little attention to before, but in fact, the retention rate of different levels of models is not only very different, but also some counterintuitive situations.
Compact cars have the worst retention rate
Compact cars are the largest sales volume in the second-hand car market, but also the most popular models, Langyi, Xuanyi, Corolla, etc. as long as the car is in good condition, not only is it very sought-after, the retention rate is also relatively good.
But the fact that the overall retention rate of compact cars is the worst of all classes is indeed counterintuitive.
There are probably two reasons, one is that there are indeed many star retention rates in this level, but there are also many models with unbearable retention rates.
Secondly, there is a law in the second-hand car market, the number of second-hand car transactions and the retention rate are basically inversely proportional, at least at this level, this law is established.
This is also very easy to understand, take Xuanyi, for example, the more people who sell second-hand Xuanyi, the cheaper Xuanyi will definitely be. For car dealers, Xuanyi and Langyi also make money by walking, and on average, their profits are not too high on each car.
The higher the level, the higher the retention rate
From the perspective of level, it can basically be said that the higher the level of the model, the higher the retention rate. From compact cars, to medium-sized cars, to medium-sized cars, to large cars, all follow this law. SUV is basically the same, compact, medium, to medium and large, the retention rate is incremental.
However, there is an exception, that is, small cars, small cars than compact cars, the overall retention rate is nearly 10%, which is a very exaggerated gap.
So why, let's first think about who else is in the current small car, we can find the reason. Polo, Fit, Life, Vios, Zhixuan, in addition to these models, there are basically no other models in this class. Domestic cars are almost extinct in this field. And these few are all value-preserving stars. In the market segment supported by several value-preserving stars, can the retention rate be worse?
Which brands hold the most value?
Ashkenazi: One head and one tail are the highlights
Having said the level, let's take a look at each brand who is more valuable. For the sake of convenience, we will discuss it on a country-by-country basis. First look at the German car, the overall retention rate of the German car is still OK, and one of the ends is a highlight.
Porsche's three-year retention rate reached 95.42% against the sky, while Skoda's three-year retention rate was only 57.7%, which is much lower than many domestic cars.
Porsche's value-added rate is against the sky for several reasons, the first of which is of course everyone's recognition of the Porsche brand and the model itself, in brand, performance, reliability, and almost all aspects, Porsche can not pick out any shortcomings. Probably the biggest problem is that it's too expensive, of course, it's not Porsche's fault...
Secondly, the retention rate is calculated in the form of second-hand car prices÷ new car guide prices, but almost no one can use the guide price to buy Porsche, plus hundreds of thousands, hundreds of thousands of options is very normal. Therefore, the guidance price of Porsche is generally much lower than the price of the car. Under the existing calculation method, the denominator is smaller, and the retention rate is naturally higher.
The level of Skoda's retention rate can only be described as miserable, the terminal is greatly optimized, the brand recognition is low, and there are not many people willing to buy a second-hand Skoda.
The ranking of the retention rate of the BBA in The German brands is also very interesting, Mercedes-Benz is significantly ahead of BMW and Audi, and BMW is slightly stronger than Audi. In BBA, the influence of brand factors on retention rate is more important than quality and displacement.
New C-class
Volkswagen's three-year retention rate is 64.58%, which can only be regarded as decent, worse than most Japanese brands, but better than most other joint ventures and independent brands.
Japanese: Generally excellent, Toyota is even better
The retention rate of Japanese brands is recognized as excellent, and this data also confirms this. For example, Infiniti, which is at the bottom of the Japanese system, has a 3-year retention rate of 62.62%, while Volkswagen is 64.58%. That is to say, the brand at the bottom of the Japanese system is not much different from the public.
On the basis of generally excellent, Toyota and Lexus are even better, with a three-year retention rate of more than 80%. This is not only related to the small discount of these two brand terminals, but also thanks to the good reliability of Toyota and Lexus. After all, for used cars, this is especially important.
If the Japanese brand is divided into three echelons, then Toyota and Lexus are undoubtedly the first echelon, Honda itself is the second echelon, and all other brands are the third echelon.
Toyota and Lexus have a 3-year retention rate of more than 80%, Honda is close to 80%, and other brands are around 60%-70%.
In fact, I think the gap between Honda and Toyota is only a little bigger than the Honda terminal discount, so the retention rate performance is slightly worse. The acceptance of the two brands in the used car market is actually almost the same.
American brands: the overall low, Tesla carries the banner
The retention rate of American brands is generally low, how low is it? Just mentioned that infiniti, which is at the bottom of the Japanese system, has a similar retention rate with Volkswagen, but Volkswagen's retention rate of 64.58% is already higher than all American brands except Tesla.
Tesla here is indeed a bright spot, the current retention rate of almost all electric vehicles can not be compared with oil cars, only Tesla is an exception, and has become the most valuable brand of American cars. I have to lament Tesla's strong brand appeal.
Autonomy: The overall is low, and Wuling and Lynk & Co perform well
The overall retention rate of independent brands is also low, and there is still a big gap with the Ashkenazi and Japanese ratios. But the whole has caught up, and even slightly surpassed the American brand.
The highest retention rate of independent brands is Wuling, not because of brand recognition, reliability, etc., but because Wuling's own models are very cheap, basically there is no premium space. Taking Wuling Hongguang as an example, a second-hand car that has been in good condition for about three years is about 40,000, but the new car is only 50,000 or 60,000.

Therefore, the high retention rate of Wuling is mainly because the price of new cars is very low, and there is no brand premium.
And Lynk & Co can be regarded as one of the most successful cases of domestic brand high-end, relying on Volvo's technical support, and its own quality, brand recognition is no less than the joint venture car.
The Korean system is decent
Legal systems are not included in the statistics
The Modern and Kia of the Korean system have a 3-year retention rate of about 62%, which is considered to be decent.
The French car, may be the amount of ownership and attention is too low, the China Automobile Dealers Association in this survey, did not involve the legal car. But as we all know, the retention rate of French cars has not been too good.
Which models hold the most value?
After talking about the level and brand, let's take a look at the specific models.
Small car: Fit wins
In the small car, The Fit is unsurprisingly the champion of the retention rate, with a three-year retention rate of 78.09%. Toyota Zhixuan and Vios also performed well. Although the Volkswagen Polo also ranked in the top 10, the retention rate and fit have been about 8% worse. If the price of the new car is 100,000 yuan, the residual value of the fit after 3 years is about 8,000 yuan more than the Polo. Relative to the level, this gap is not small.
Mini's two JCW models, the high-performance version of the MINI, also have excellent retention rates. Both cars are powered by 2.0T power, which is a well-handled, fun model that has always been popular among niche players.
Moreover, since MINI was acquired by BMW, the reliability and stability of the products have basically aligned with BMW. This is also one reason why its retention rate is performing well.
Compact Sedan:
Japanese family cars and niche imported cars dominate the list
In compact cars, the retention rate of Japanese family cars has always been very high, but this list also shows us another type of models with high retention rate, that is, niche imported cars.
First of all, Japanese family cars, The Civic topped the list with a retention rate of nearly 80%, and Jed and Fengfan, which have been discontinued, have also entered the top ten of the list. And these two cars are sought-after in the second-hand car market, and they are not worried about selling at all.
The rest of the models are basically niche imported cars, BMW 2 Series, Lexus CT, Audi S3, AMG A Class and so on are like this. The reason why this kind of car retains its value is that it has its own unique selling points, which are difficult to replace.
For example, the Volkswagen Beetle has been discontinued, although it is very popular and nothing special, but its classic appearance gives it a unique selling point.
Another example is the AMG A class, which can be called the benchmark model of the performance steel gun in this class, and the new model currently on sale, 2.0T, even squeezed out 421 horsepower, and the liter power is almost the highest in the world.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that the domestic car with the highest retention rate in this class is Lynk & Co 03, with a 3-year retention rate of 67.49%.
Mid-size car: BBA and Two Fields Dominate the Chart
In the mid-size car, it is basically dominated by the BBA, Toyota and Honda. Most of the niche imported cars in the BBA have unique selling points, such as the Audi S4 with the highest retention rate, which not only has a 3.0T longitudinal V6, a maximum of 354 horsepower, a full-time four-wheel drive of machinery, and more importantly, it is about 100,000 cheaper than the price of the AMG C43.
Therefore, in this class, the S4 can hardly find alternative models, and it is not surprising that the retention rate is high.
In addition to this niche model, the more popular model in the BBA is the Mercedes-Benz C-class, on the word of mouth, on the actual performance, C-class and 3 series, A4 than there is no obvious advantage, but the C-class retention rate is higher, but also once again proves the impact of brand acceptance on the retention rate.
In addition to the BBA, only camry and accord have squeezed into the top ten of the mid-level car retention rate, which is also the highest retention rate of the civilian brand. The long version is very long, and there are almost no short boards, which is the reason why these two cars are enough to preserve their value.
Domestic brands have not been able to get their hands on the middle car in the mid-level car, but the Hongqi H5 has sold well with the brand blessing and high cost performance of the Hongqi. It has also become the most preserved value of the domestic mid-level car, the 3-year retention rate of 63.64%, although it can not be compared with the Accord, but for the domestic car, it is not bad.
Medium and large cars: everything is in order
There are not many medium and large cars on the market, and its retention rate performance can be said to be step by step, no surprises, no surprises.
The only thing worth mentioning is that the Toyota Crown is still very valuable. Recently, there have been rumors that the 15th generation of crowns may be introduced to China this year, and some people say that this car has been discontinued in Japan, so it is impossible.
15th Generation Crown
Then there was news that the next generation to be introduced to China was the 16th generation of crowns. In short, the news is still relatively chaotic, let the bullets fly for a while, and then we will talk to you in detail when we have the exact news.
16th Generation Crown Hypothetical Diagram
Small SUVs: Jimney is still favored
Domestic cars performed well
The highest retention rate in small SUVs is The Jimney, as the smallest hardcore SUV, Jimney has always had its own fans, and has always been very popular in the small circle.
In the joint venture brand, the bearers of the retention rate are Toyota's CH-R, Yize and Honda's XR-V and Binzhi.
It is worth mentioning that the independent model performs well in this class, and the retention rate of Changan CS35 PLUS is even slightly higher than that of Binzhi. The Tiggo 3X and Vista X3 also performed well.
However, several generations of Changan CS35 PLUS models have accumulated a good reputation, good quality and reliability, so the retention rate is high. The reason for the higher retention rate of Tiggo 3X and Vision X3 is similar to that of Wuling Hongguang, mainly because the new cars are too cheap.
Compact SUV: Haval H5 lit up, H6 fell off the list
The compact SUV is the largest and most watched of the SUVs. The retention rate of the TOP 10 Li Japanese system accounted for 7 models, CR-V, RAV4 unsurprisingly occupied the top two. Mazda CX-5, X-Trail, Outlander and others also performed well.
In contrast, many SUVs such as Volkswagen Tanyue and Tuyue all fell off the list. The highest retention rate in Germany is the Volkswagen Tiguan, but the retention rate is only 62.47%, which is about 10% different from japanese cars. Based on the calculation of 200,000 yuan for the new car, the difference between the residual value and the Japanese opponent after 3 years is about 20,000 yuan, and the gap is still not small.
Among its own brands, only one Haval H5 is on the list, and H5 is a hardcore SUV that Haval has discontinued. The new car is only about 100,000, relative to the price of off-road capabilities is still very strong, in the small circle of hardcore SUVs, is a rare cost-effective choice.
In addition to H5, the self-owned brands also have a good retention rate of Lynk & Co 01, Beijing BJ40 and so on. The H6, which won the title, did not make the list.
Medium SUV: Highlander is unassailable
The list of medium-sized SUVs, if I blindly guess, can probably guess seven or eight. Highlander is still the unassailable king, and the Porsche Macan and Highlander have almost the same retention rate.
Honda Guandao and UR-V are both on the list, and Mercedes-Benz GRC and BMW X3 are not surprisingly on the list. What is different from what I guessed is that the Audi Q5L fell off the list, and the GRC coupe retention rate was so high.
Regarding the GLC coupe, I think the appearance may be its biggest selling point. However, the evaluation of this appearance by my friends around me is very polarized, and you can express your opinion in the message area.
Medium and large SUVs: All you can think of is on the list
There are not many medium and large SUVs on the market, and almost all of them are the handles of the retention rate. The top 9 on the list are well deserved, and the tenth place volkswagen Tuang seems to be a bit like a number.
MPV: Where did Wilfaf go?
The situation of MPV is the same as that of medium and large SUVs, and the MPV that can count the names on the market are basically on the list. The first place has no suspense, it must be Alpha. This is also the model with the highest retention rate on this list, with a three-year retention rate of 117.76%.
Of course, we don't think that this car can still make money after buying for three years, as mentioned earlier, the algorithm of the retention rate is the second-hand car price÷ the new car guidance price, if you count the money added when buying the car, the three-year retention rate is definitely more than 100%.
However, I did not see WillFa in this list, although the price increase of Willfa is not as exaggerated as Alpha, but the retention rate can definitely enter the TOP 10. The reason why it did not enter the list, we guess may be because Wilf law has been in China for less than 3 years.
The retention rate of electric vehicles
The retention rate of electric vehicles is also receiving more and more attention, but because the vast majority of electric vehicles on the market are currently less than 3 years old, it is impossible to count the 3-year retention rate. So this list gives a 1-year retention rate ranking, this list has a certain reference significance, but buy a car for a year to sell, after all, is only a minority, so the reference significance of this list is also relatively limited.
Write at the end
Every time we talk about the retention rate, there are always some people who say that they just bought a car and considered selling a car, is it a bit redundant. But I recently saw a set of data that I wanted to share with you:
Among Chinese car owners, 43% have used a car for less than 3 years; 14% of car owners have sold it within a year of using a car; and the proportion of post-80s consumers who change cars within one year after buying a new car is as high as 17%.
It can be seen that young consumers rarely have a car to scrap, and the replacement cycle is getting shorter and shorter, so the retention rate has become a factor that everyone must consider when buying a car.
Finally, what do you think about today's retention rate ranking, welcome to leave a message to discuss.
