Lamborghini transformed into new energy, stopped selling fuel vehicles next year and launched the first plug-in hybrid model

With the ferocious arrival of the new energy wave of automobiles, even the supercar with displacement first is difficult to escape the new energy. As a world-renowned supercar brand, Lamborghini has not "escaped the disaster". Yesterday (January 24), Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said that after 2022 Lamborghini will stop selling pure fuel-powered models. This means that from 2023, Lamborghini will be fully transformed into a new energy supercar brand. Although Lamborghini's transformation came very suddenly, it is not surprising at all. Under the wheel of global automobile development, has the era of supercar new energy arrived?

The "standouts" suddenly transformed

When Lamborghini announced the comprehensive transformation of new energy, I believe that the reaction to most people is unexpected and reasonable. Compared with Ferrari, McLaren and other supercar brands that have launched new energy power models, Lamborghini has always insisted on using large-displacement self-priming engines such as 5.2-liter V10 and 6.5-liter V12, keeping the last "bottom line" of supercar models in power. And from last year's market performance, Lamborghini delivered a total of 8405 new cars in 2021, with sales up 13% year-on-year. In the case of long-term insistence on pure fuel power and market performance is still good, Lamborghini suddenly announced a complete transformation, which is indeed very surprising.

But under the wave of new energy, even Lamborghini cannot escape the new energy. From the perspective of power, the 5.2-liter V10, 6.5-liter V12 and 4.0TV8 engines used by Lamborghini models are "not environmentally friendly" wherever they are placed, especially in the European market, which has strict requirements for displacement and emissions. At the same time, compared with Ferrari, McLaren and other brands, Lamborghini has lost the advantage of pre-emptive strike in the face of the new energy supercar market, so Lamborghini does need to immediately catch up in new energy products.

€1.5 billion in transformation

In terms of transformation plans, Lamborghini said it has prepared 1.5 billion euros (about 10.758 billion yuan) for the development and launch of plug-in hybrid models. It is reported that Lamborghini's first plug-in hybrid model will be released and launched in 2023, while the pure electric model is expected to be launched in 2025. According to Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini's first all-electric model may be a four-door model that is more inclined to everyday use.

However, before 2023, Lamborghini will still update its fuel model. This year, Lamborghini will officially deliver the Aventador Ultimae, which will also be the last pure fuel V12 powered model launched by Lamborghini. At the same time, the new Urus Eov is also about to complete testing, and is expected to be officially released in the second half of this year.

The era of supercar new energy has come?

In fact, the new energy supercar is not a new thing for us, as early as 2013 Porsche officially mass-produced the V8 + dual motor hybrid flagship sports car 918 Spyder, at the same time McLaren P1, Ferrari Laferrari has also been released, the three cars as the flagship model of their respective brands at that time, its hybrid power also let the public feel the charm of the new energy supercar. Later, Porsche also launched the taycan, a pure electric sports car, and Ferrari launched the SF90, a plug-in supercar that was faster than the Laferrari. Therefore, in the new energy supercar market, consumers can choose the models that have been enriched, and the new energy era of supercar has begun. But for Lamborghini, which does not have a new energy-powered model, it is already in a state of "backwardness".

Unlike Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche and other brands, the transformation of Lamborghini to new energy is particularly aggressive, not only to launch the first plug-in hybrid model next year but also to bid farewell to pure fuel vehicles and achieve a complete transformation to new energy. Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche are adopting a parallel strategy, launching new energy vehicles and updating fuel vehicles. Whether it is forced by policy or in order to seize the market, such a rapid and thorough transformation also sees Lamborghini's determination to embrace new energy, and we also look forward to the new car of Lamborghini under the blessing of new energy power to give us more surprises.
