Damei Dunhuang "flew" into Shanghai's centuries-old building, and digital technology "resurrected" grotto murals

The "Dunhuang people" represented by Chang Shuhong and others have left artistic footprints in Shanghai; "Daughter of Dunhuang" Fan Jinshi has long been rooted in the desert and devoted herself to studying and promoting Dunhuang culture and art; the Shanghai Shanghai Theater has created an original drama "Daughter of Dunhuang" for this purpose, which has attracted wide attention... It can be said that Shanghai is a city with a special relationship with Dunhuang.

When the ancient beauty of Dunhuang meets the centuries-old Shen family garden in Shanghai, Dunhuang culture spans the distance of time and space and glows with new life. Lasting four months, the "Dunhuang Theme Exhibition celebrating the centenary of the founding of the Party" recently closed at the former site of Shenjia Garden in Fengxian District, Shanghai, showing a total of more than 40 fine murals of dunhuang grottoes, 3 reproductions of painted sculptures, 10 volumes of documents excavated from Dunhuang Tibetan Scripture Caves, and more than 60 precious dunhuang Tibetan scripture cave reproduction scrolls.

From the caves to the old bungalows, this historic building collides with different sparks, and the exquisite Dunhuang Grottoes digital high-fidelity murals and exquisite reproduction scrolls attract a large number of Dunhuang culture lovers to come to the exhibition. "A single-dimensional physical space often lacks temperature, but when it is injected with high-quality cultural content that matches it and discovers the story behind it, then art and culture empower the architectural space and make it more humanistic." Cai Zhiwen, secretary of the party branch and deputy general manager of Reader (Shanghai) Culture and Creativity Co., Ltd., introduced that during the four-month exhibition, more than 40 volunteers alone experienced what is the "Mogao Spirit" in practice.

A group of enthusiastic cultural enthusiasts and communicators continue to join. Ge Xinye, who trains docents, said that the two youngest single mural watchmen in the exhibition, Jin Yi and Zhang Zhihao, are third-grade children, "In the past four months, I have seen their growth, from being familiar with only one mural, to having a basic understanding of most of the mural content later, Dunhuang culture has sown a seed in their hearts." Another Xu Jing, who is also a docent, also brought her daughter Zhou Siyu to the scene to be the watchman of a single mural, which may be the charm of Dunhuang culture.

Volunteer representative Wang Rong used the keyword "gratitude" to describe her mood - when she went to Dunhuang before, she was thinking that she could be a Dunhuang grotto docent once, but she did not expect to be able to realize this wish last year, and the reader bookstore platform allowed people without artistic background or explanation experience to volunteer, which is also the inheritance of Dunhuang culture between different generations. Zhu Wenke, Zhou Siyu and Zhu Yuhan, the guardians of the single mural, respectively shared their experiences in the process of explanation, believing that through the exhibition, they deepened their understanding of the Dunhuang murals and were also a comprehensive exercise in spreading traditional culture.

Su Bomin, president of the Dunhuang Research Institute, said through a video that Dunhuang culture has lasted for nearly two thousand years, is the world's largest existing scale, the longest duration, the richest content, the most complete preservation of the treasure house of art, is a bright pearl in the long river of world civilization, and is also a precious historical material for studying the politics, economy, military, culture and art of various ethnic groups in ancient China. For more than 70 years, generations of Dunhuang people have adhered to the Mogao spirit of "adhering to the desert, being willing to dedicate, having the courage to take responsibility, and forging ahead in a pioneering spirit", and under extremely difficult material living conditions, they have made important research achievements in the collation and protection and restoration of Dunhuang Grottoes, the promotion of Dunhuang culture and art research, cultural tourism development and site management.

The exhibition form adopts the combination of virtual reality and murals; just like the renovation of the Shen Family Garden, the modern construction technology and traditional craftsmanship are integrated to achieve the traditional new modern aesthetic form and artistic quality, providing visitors with an interactive viewing experience. In the theme exhibition, the use of immersive technology, VR virtual roaming technology, intelligent audio guide system and other modern scientific and technological means to truly reproduce the content of the mural, the combination of tradition and technology, both static and dynamic, providing a vivid viewing experience. The more than 40 digital high-fidelity reproduction murals of the Dunhuang Grottoes on display this time are the reuse of digital technology.

According to industry evaluation, this public welfare exhibition has cultural lectures, interactive experiences, and functional spaces for cultural and creative products to enrich the viewing experience of tourists, but also to dig deep into historical relics and pass on the flame of Dunhuang culture, which is a vivid case of telling Chinese stories and promoting the spread of national culture. It is reported that the exhibition is sponsored by Dunhuang Research Institute, China Dunhuang Grottoes Conservation and Research Foundation, Readers Publishing Group Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Fengxian Development (Group) Co., Ltd.
