Japanese automaker Toyota plans to launch its own operating system for its cars by 2025, which will be able to handle everything from basic functions to autonomous driving.

With the Arene operating system, Toyota will work with competitors such as Tesla and Volkswagen, as well as technology companies, to set standards for drive software for next-generation cars, according to the Nikkei Asian Review.

It is understood that Arene will control basic components such as steering wheel, brakes and throttle, and manage the safety system as well as location and traffic information, and all vehicles equipped with the system can use the sharing function. In addition, consumers can update the system online, just like smartphone software, which can quickly improve performance.

Toyota aims to install the Arene in its own cars by 2025. Toyota will then make the software available to subsidiaries including Subaru, as well as other manufacturers and startups working on electric or autonomous vehicles. Toyota is considering monetizing Arena through a licensing model.

In addition, Toyota expects that as more users and developers join, Arene will become a more effective platform, generating more data that can be used to create new services.

The report notes that the competition to add value to the car has shifted from traditional hardware such as engines and gears to the software that controls it. U.S.-based Lux Research predicts that electronics and software will account for 50 percent of the cost of cars by 2030, up from 20 percent in 2000.
