What is this EDR?
Simply put, it is similar to the black box on an airplane, which can record various detailed data before the accident in order to analyze the cause of the accident.
Placed on the car, it is possible to record the key operation data of the car in the three stages before, during and after the collision (including speed, ABS status, seat belt status, etc.).
Can't these driving recorders do this?
This is not really the same thing as a dashcam.
The driving recorder is at best to record video information, GPS data, etc., and cannot record the operating status of the vehicle.
The information recorded by EDR can reproduce the accident process, and if each car is forced to install an EDR system, then after the accident, it is estimated that it will not be so ridiculous.
Many countries abroad have written passenger cars equipped with EDRs into bills or industry standards.
Among them, the United States clarified as early as 2014 that all new cars need to be mandatorily equipped with EDR, South Korea has been mandatory to install EDR since December 2015, Europe requires mandatory installation of new cars in March 2022, and plans to equip stock vehicles in 2024.
The domestic EDR progress, in fact, is not slow, at the end of November 2019, the EDR standard has been unified, but it has not been mandatory to install.

However, from January next year, the mandatory installation of EDR is not yet the full version, and only the most basic data is recorded, such as the braking condition and speed of the car.
The full version of the EDR will wait until 2024, including various accurate data such as air bag status, tire pressure, and the exact time of the accident.

Especially with the advent of automatic driving, the data is more complex and diverse, and the characteristics of automatic driving and the division of liability for accidents are also a problem.
Today's EDR standards are only standards developed under the existing driving conditions, and when full automatic driving arrives, its existing standards may not be used as the basis for the division of accident liability.
The standard for EDR needs to be constantly improved, including privacy.
Since it is recording data, it means that privacy will be leaked, although the current EDR only involves the recording and extraction of data, and generally does not record video or audio.
But as mentioned earlier, when the complete automatic driving arrives, in order to better divide the subject of accident responsibility, it is necessary to record more data, perhaps then audio information and video information also need to be recorded, privacy protection will also become a problem.
The importance of EDR data is indescribable, it involves not only personal data, but also the recording of various driving data, and in a large way, even national security.
Therefore, while enforcing the installation of EDR systems, it is necessary to take security measures, and relevant laws and regulations also need to be improved.
However, in any case, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's regulations came in a timely manner, at least in case of an accident in the future, the car company and the owner of the car can also be reduced as much as possible.
