Starting this year, cars will be forced to install "black boxes"! What is said in the car will be recorded?

Who is responsible for a traffic accident, and what if the two sides have their own opinions? A more effective vehicle safety configuration is being implemented in the domestic automotive industry.

Starting this year, all new cars must be fitted with "black boxes". Today, a number of domestic car companies confirmed to reporters that they have been equipped with "black boxes" on new cars, but car owners do not have to worry about privacy leakage.

Different from the driving recorder, the car "black box" only records the data of the key components of the vehicle, does not record videos and audio recordings, and it will become an important basis for investigating accidents like the "black box" of the aircraft.

Starting this year, cars will be forced to install "black boxes"! What is said in the car will be recorded?

The "black box" is very different from the "dashcam"

According to the requirements of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's newly revised "Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation", from January 2022, newly produced passenger cars must be equipped with an EDR system - driving event recorder. The device, known as the "black box" of the car, can record the vehicle operation data before and after the accident.

It is reported that the full name of EDR is Event Data Recorder, that is, the car event data recording system, which is used to record the key data of the operation of the car in the three stages before, during and after the collision (speed, ABS status, seat belt status, etc.). In layman's terms, the driver stepped on the accelerator a few times before the accident, the vehicle turned a few turns, and the steering angle of the steering wheel can be recorded in it.

Many car owners have installed a driving recorder to restore the truth of the accident to their private cars, so what is the difference between the "black box" and the ordinary driving recorder? According to industry insiders, the car video recorder and the "black box" are actually not a concept at all. The various "driving recorders" on the market record only superficial GPS and video data, and do not record the key data of vehicle operation at the time of the accident (vehicle speed, steering angle of the steering wheel, airbag status, vehicle braking state, etc.). The "black box" generally does not have the function of recording audio or video, only recording parameters.

For example, in a serious traffic accident with multiple vehicles colliding, the surveillance video shows that the vehicle that caused the accident suddenly started, accelerated forward, and continuously hit the vehicles and pedestrians on the road; the driver recalled that he was stopping before the incident and waiting for people, when he hung up N gear, stepped on the brake, waited for a while, the vehicle suddenly rushed forward, and then slammed the brake to the end, but the vehicle not only could not slow down, but also faster and faster... Both sides have their own opinions.

The identification experts read the EDR data stored in the airbag computer (ACU) of the accident vehicle, and the results showed that the speed lever gear of the accident vehicle was always in D gear before the accident, and the accelerator pedal opening rose rapidly from 33% to 100%, and then continued to be at maximum opening; the engine speed increased with the increase of the accelerator pedal opening, from 3100 RPM to 4800 RPM; and the driving speed rose from 24km/h to 56km/h The brake pedal switch is always off (i.e. the brake pedal is not pressed). Investigation conclusion: In this accident, the driver mistakenly used the throttle as a brake.

"Black box" data extraction has strict restrictions

Today, SAIC-GM, SAIC, Weilai Automobile, WM Motors and many other large domestic car companies have confirmed to reporters that they have installed an EDR system in the new car in accordance with the requirements of national mandatory laws and regulations, which will serve the accident restoration of insurance, accident and public security systems, consumers will not have any feelings in car purchase, and the driving experience will not change in any way. At the same time, some car companies said that the national big data system platform serving this system is being planned to be established.

"Before that, in fact, many new cars, especially models that use electronic brake systems, have been installed with EDR systems, such as electronic brake systems generally have data records, and airbags also have data storage. This year's new requirements unify the EDR devices of various car companies, which is conducive to data processing and extraction. Relevant people in the car company said that EDR equipment is generally installed in the front cabin of the vehicle, with a high level of protection, but it will not affect the cost of the new car, the cost of the equipment is about 300-500 yuan. On the contrary, it is beneficial to the development of new automotive technologies, the development of automatic driving needs to distinguish the responsibilities of car owners and car companies, EDR will escort the development of automatic driving technology, and it is also conducive to third parties such as insurance to enter the market.

So will the EDR system leak the owner's information? Yesterday, Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the National Passenger Transport Association, said that this equipment has strict restrictions on data extraction, generally only after the accident, by the owner or the public security department to extract, the car company is unable to obtain the owner data without authorization.
