Without a reliable safety monitoring data logging system, whether the accident is caused by the driver's operation error, or whether it is caused by a failure of one of the vehicle's electronic equipment or the design defects of the vehicle becomes difficult to analyze, and the driver often disagrees with the car manufacturer.

On the evening of May 9, the introduction posted an apology letter on Weibo for the owner of The Wenzhou Tesla out of control, admitting that he had mistakenly stepped on the accelerator pedal and apologizing to Tesla and the public.

The apology letter said that on the night of the accident, when driving home, he suddenly found someone in front of him and wanted to step on the brakes, but he stepped on the wrong accelerator. He also said that after the accident, although he knew that he had stepped on the accelerator as a brake, he was unwilling to fabricate "Tesla automatic acceleration brake failure" and other content on multiple media.

Because the owner mentioned "Henan Car Advocate Lady" and "Tianjin Owner Mr. Han" in the apology letter, they also responded on Weibo, implying that the apology letter was written by Tesla itself, and many of the contents inside were untrue.

In fact, nearly two years have passed since the wenzhou accident, but there have been various disputes in the follow-up, especially after the accident, the owner publicly claimed that the vehicle was out of control and suddenly accelerated, even if there was an accident appraisal result later, the owner and Tesla are still pulling.

If such an accident occurs in an ordinary vehicle, the context of things may be very clear, but this is Tesla, and it is also linked to the self-driving technology that has been questioned many times, so the incident lasted for nearly two years and is still receiving great attention.

On August 12, 2020, a Tesla Model 3 in Wenzhou suddenly lost control when driving into the residential parking lot, and then hit more than a dozen cars in a row before finally stopping, after the accident, the owner said that at that time, the Model 3 did not turn on automatic assisted driving, and the vehicle suddenly lost control and accelerated, although he carried out emergency braking but had no effect. He also said that he is an "old driver" with more than ten years of driving experience, and he will never make the mistake of "braking and stepping on the accelerator".

On October 13, 2020, the Wenzhou Society of Automotive Engineers issued an "Appraisal Opinion", saying that after analyzing the background data and comparing with the EDR accident data, the brake pedals did not work (in the state of not being stepped on) within 5 seconds before the accident collision.

After that, Mr. Chen made a record in the Wenzhou traffic police department, admitting that he did not step on the brakes at that time, but stepped on the accelerator as a brake.

However, after the appraisal report was released, the owner of the car, Mr. Chen, posted a video on the social platform, saying that he was only persuaded by friends to settle claims for the insurance company, and had to admit that he stepped on the wrong pedal. At the same time, it was questioned that the test of the Wenzhou Society of Automotive Engineers was carried out with the help of a special inspection tool provided by Tesla, so there was a flaw. He also posted on his personal social media such as "Tesla is out of control" and "Tesla suddenly accelerated and the brakes failed". It was this social media content that led Tesla to file a reputation lawsuit against it.

The later result was that the owner lost the lawsuit, and the court ordered the owner to compensate Tesla for 50,000 yuan and posted an apology for no less than 90 days on the original account of Douyin.

Until now a letter of apology...

An accident that was quite simple was so troublesome, all because of automatic driving (now most car companies have changed their name to assisted driving), and now mass-produced and vehicles with auxiliary driving functions can now achieve autonomous acceleration, deceleration, turning and lane change operations.

These functions seem convenient, but they bring a lot of unnecessary trouble to the subsequent identification of vehicle accidents, especially at the stage when the current technology is not very mature, and there are doubts from all sides. It has even been suggested that monitoring be installed inside the car to detect the real-time status of the acceleration and brake pedals.

Many people may have paid attention to the fact that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued a document last year that from January 1 this year, newly produced passenger cars must be mandatorily equipped with EDR (Automotive Event Data Recording System), and after the event, the data recorded by EDR should be able to be extracted, and the data should be prevented from being tampered with or deleted.

EDR mainly records the data before and after the accident of the vehicle, including the vehicle operation data before, when and after the accident, such as vehicle speed, steering wheel steering angle, ABS status, acceleration and brake pedal status, and the driver's response operation at the time of the accident.

Reading the data recorded by EDR through special equipment can determine the actual operating parameters of the vehicle before and after the accident, which can determine the cause of the accident and support the accident identification.

CDR Traffic Accident Car Crash Data Reading Tool

On April 22 this year, a Tesla Model 3 had a rear-end accident at the second highway of Beijing Airport, and after the accident, the owner said in the online media that the vehicle suddenly accelerated and the brakes failed, and the cause of the accident was all attributed to the vehicle.

Recently, Tesla responded to data based on vehicle EDR:

1. On April 22, the parties believed that the accident caused by the "brake failure" of the vehicle was reported as an insurance policy. Tesla then retrieved background data for verification, which showed that the driver avoided the truck in front of him and turned the steering wheel to the left, and slammed the acceleration pedal sharply during the steering, causing the speed of the car to rise and eventually lead to a collision, and the driver did not step on the brake pedal before the collision. After the first collision, the driver pressed the accelerator pedal for a long, sustained, and large margin, and many more collisions occurred. During consecutive collisions, the driver has two successive braking pedals and each time the brake pedal lasts less than 1 second. Tesla then informed the parties of the situation, but the parties expressed their disapproval.

2. The insurance company hopes to divide the responsibility by retrieving EDR data, and the parties contact the relevant departments of the national automobile quality supervision to express their hope to investigate the matter, and the relevant departments have responded quickly. Therefore, under the joint witness of the relevant state departments, parties, third-party experts and Tesla four parties, the on-site EDR data collection of the accident vehicle was carried out on April 27. The results showed that the EDR data was consistent with the conclusion of the background data analysis.

To put it simply, it is the EDR data that confirms that this matter is caused by the owner stepping on the wrong accelerator pedal, and it can be said that the existence of EDR has played a key role in determining the responsibility of the above accidents.

This article is not for the owner or Tesla voice, but think that after the EDR, there is not much need for controversy in events like Tesla brake doors, EDR can record detailed data, and the data can not be tampered with and deleted, anyone who wants to know the real reason for the event, refer to the EDR data record.
