Recently, Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) announced the establishment of the Theory Center.
The Theoretical Center is chaired by MSRA Principal Researcher and IEEE Fellow Chen Wei.
At the same time, the center has also set up an advisory committee, including Ma Zhiming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, John Hopcroft, winner of the Turing Award, and Deng Xiaotie, academician of the European Academy of Sciences, and many other big cattle at home and abroad.
The center will focus on solving fundamental problems in areas including deep learning, reinforcement learning, dynamic systems learning, and data-driven optimization.
MSRA Dean Zhou Lidong said at the 2021 Theory Symposium held on December 11:
It is hoped that the establishment of the Theoretical Center can create a theoretical core for the Institute in the process of solving basic problems in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence, advocate the principled thinking behind scientific research, and strengthen extensive ties with the international theoretical community.
Why set up a theoretical center?
For the original intention of the establishment of the Theory Center, John Hopcroft, the winner of the Turing Award who was invited to join the Advisory Board of the Theory Center, said at the meeting that "there are still many problems to be studied in artificial intelligence systems":
Taking training AI systems as an example, it is necessary to understand how much data is needed and how to do it to be more thematic and efficient, but unfortunately, as of now, we do not have much theoretical support for this matter.
Therefore, in the future, we must develop relevant theoretical research.
This is as Dean Zhou Lidong said at the meeting, "Theory is the foundation of computer science and the driving force for the development of computer technology." ”
Ma Zhiming, another member of the advisory board of the Theory Center, an academician and mathematician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said of the MSRA Theory Center:
It is hoped that the establishment of the theoretical center can better promote the integration of theoretical computer science and mathematics and build a solid mathematical foundation for artificial intelligence.
Four academicians at home and abroad joined
You Chenwei, director of the newly established Theory Center, graduated from the Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua University with a master's degree and received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University.
Prior to joining MSRA, Wei Chen worked at Oracle.
In 2020, Wei Chen was selected as an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to the research of algorithms for maximizing the influence of social networks.
At the same time, MsRA principal investigator and head of the Computing and Learning Theory Group Chen Wei served as the co-director of the Theory Center.
The Advisory Board of the Theory Center is responsible for advising the Theoretical Center on its development, providing support for relevant projects and seminars, and evaluating the scientific progress of the Theoretical Center.
In the entire advisory committee, a total of four academicians at home and abroad have joined.
Among them is John Hopcroft, an IBM name professor in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University, who is also a member of the American Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a winner of the 1986 Turing Award.
Ma Zhiming, who is currently the dean of the School of Statistics and Data Science at Nankai University, is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In addition, the committee members also include Deng Xiaotie, academician of the European Academy of Sciences, Terry Lyons, academician of the Royal Society, Teng Shanghua, winner of the Gödel Prize, and Cynthia Dwork, outstanding chief scientist of Microsoft.
The next step of the Theory Center will be to launch postdoctoral programs, visiting scholar programs, intern programs, regular academic lectures and other activities, and annual summer programs and winter seminars are also planned.
