Today in history: Sony was born; Bungie was founded; pioneers of data sorting structures were born

Organize | Wang Qilong

Through "the present in history", the future can be seen from the past, and the future can be changed from the present.

Today is May 7, 2022, and on this day in 2016, a driver named Joshua Brown became the first person in the world to die in a self-driving car accident while driving a Tesla Model S. Under the bright sky, neither Tesla's Autopilot system nor the driver noticed the heavy-duty truck on the side, so it didn't slam on the brakes; after the incident, Tesla stocks at the time fell 3 percent after U.S. stocks. Looking back at May 7 in the history of technology, what other key events occurred on that day?

Sony was founded in 1946 by Daisuke Inoue, who had a background in technology research and development, and Akio Morita, who was good at public relations and marketing. It has been selected as one of the world's top 500 companies by Fortune magazine for many times. It is currently headquartered in Sony City, Minami- minami, Minato-ku, Tokyo.

In October 1945, Inoue Daidai established the Tokyo Communications Research Institute at the Shirakanako Department Store warehouse in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. Akio Morita joined the joint venture at the invitation of Ino-dae and formally established Tokyo Communications Industry Co., Ltd. in 1946. In his company's "Letter of Incorporation", Inochi Daidai expects to "give full play to the skills of diligent and conscientious technicians to create an ideal factory that is free and open-minded, relaxed and happy", and looks forward to becoming an "engineer's paradise".

In the early days of its establishment, Sony could not grow steadily, until 10 years later, in 1955, Inobuchi Began to develop transistor technology that was not optimistic at that time, and developed Japan's first transistor radio "TR-55" in one fell swoop, and the company's operation finally gradually improved; in the same year, the company began to use the Latin "Sonus" and the English word "Sonny boy" to form "SONY" (Sony) as the brand name, and entered the United States with this name. In 1958, the company changed its name to Sony Corporation. After that, Sony's black-and-white TV sold well, with its single-gun three-beam color mapping tube Trinitron, the video system Betamax and walkman all succeeding, and taking advantage of the acquisition of Columbian films, taking the rights to "Spider-Man".

Due to the success of the red and white Nintendo console produced by Nintendo Corporation, Sony announced a partnership with Nintendo in 1988 to jointly develop a CD-ROM console for Super Nintendo. In May 1992, for some reason, the collaboration broke the game; beginning in 1993, Sony's Sony Music Japan established Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) to fight against the gaming market dominated by Nintendo. On December 3, 1994, SCE officially launched its first game console: the PlayStation (PS), and as of March 31, 2007, the PlayStation series, with sales of 230 million units, became the world's most successful product after Walkman.

The PlayStation console beat rival Nintendo, forced away SEGA, led the traditional camera brand with digital cameras, monopolized the market for image receiving chips, and sold WELL in the VAIO series of PCs. But since the 2001 global recession, the Internet bubble; since the release of 1994, the PlayStation has not published an original product for 10 years; itself in the electronic field because Walkman does not support the MP3 format, Apple's iPod digital Walkman is sold worldwide, replacing the original status of Walkman; color map tube TV has also been ruthlessly replaced by LCD TVs... A series of decision-making errors and the continuous compression of electronic product prices led to Sony's unprecedented success in 2000, and by 2002 it was severely frustrated.

On September 22, 2005, Sony changed its mid-term corporate strategy, and the electronics, games, and entertainment industries were listed by Sony as a key industry. In 2012, Kazuo Hirai took office as President and CEO of Sony, proposing to integrate Sony's internal "One Sony" reform plan and set three major development directions for the electronics business: imaging technology, gaming, and mobile. In 2019, Sony merged its mobile, TV and camera businesses. What was your first impression of Sony as a company? Which of the three major console platforms do you think has a greater advantage? May 7, 1991: Bungie is founded

There is such a game company, which has been valued by Jobs and promoted at the press conference; and has developed countless classic game series as a Microsoft general; but it has turned to Activision after breaking away from Microsoft, and last year it was transferred to Sony; this company has undergone several name changes, and on the road to independence and acquisition, it is Bungie Company. When it comes to FPS (first-person shooter) games, Bungie must be a topic that is hard to get around. Founded on May 7, 1991, the company became a global hit with its Halo series, released on Xbox, and was once a landmark in the shooter genre.

On May 7, 1991, Alex Seropione, a college student at the University of Chicago, founded a company under the name Bungie Software Products Corporation, and in an artificial intelligence class at the University of Chicago, Seropione met programmer Jason Jones. At the time, the latter was porting the homemade game Minotaur from the Apple II to the Macintosh platform.

The two hit it off and decided to develop the game together on the Macintosh platform. In its early years, the company focused on the Macintosh platform, and they developed the Marathon and Myth series, which were loved by players. In 1999, Bungie unveiled her next project, Halo: Battle Evolution. Originally planned it was designed as a third-person shooter that would land on Windows and Macintosh systems. At MacWorld in 1999, Steve Jobs, who was still Apple's interim CEO at the time, officially unveiled Halo. However, Bungie's fate with Apple came to an end.

On June 19, 2000, Bungie, who was celebrating its ninth anniversary, announced that it had been acquired by Microsoft, and that their Halo: Battle Evolution would be changed to a first-person shooter and launched on Microsoft's console Xbox. Halo created millions of sales, became the killer software of Xbox, and opened up the first wasteland for Microsoft's development in the game industry. After bungie produced three Halo games for Microsoft, it gained independence through negotiations with Microsoft to relinquish the "Halo" copyright and the conditions for the production of two more Halo series of games. Halo: Hell Parachutes and Halo: Far Star were the birth works of this time, after which Bungie officially gained his freedom and successfully broke away from Microsoft, and a new work "Destiny" is also in the works.

In April 2010, Bungie signed a ten-year contract with the well-known game company Activision to release a first-person shooter: Destiny in 2014. In 2017, Destiny 2 was released. In January 2019, Bungie announced the termination of the partnership and the return to control of Destiny. In 2022, Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, and Bungie's last boss became part of his old club. In January 2022, Sony's PlayStation announced bungie joining Sony Interactive Entertainment Global Studios on its official Twitter, but Sony did not restrict Bungie like Microsoft, it continued to keep the studio independent after the acquisition, Bungie still has the independent distribution rights of Destiny Series, and Sony will support Bungie's future multi-platform development direction. Acquired this legendary company born on the same day as himself, but can not control its thinking, Sony is a loss or a profit? Feel free to leave your opinion in the comments section.
