Playstation CEO Confirms Sony 'Plans to Make More Acquisitions'

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed that Sony has more game studio acquisitions in addition to the recent acquisitions of Bungie and Haven.

Sony last month announced the acquisition of Haven,Canada's Monreal, which brings playStation's first-party studios to more than 18.

Prior to that, PlayStation recently acquired Destiny developer Bungie, Demon's Souls studio Bluepoint Games, Returns developer Housemarque, Nixxes Software, and British developer Firerite, founded by former members of SIE studio Liverpool.

In PlayStation's latest podcast, SIE President Ryan confirmed that Sony is making further acquisitions.

"Our work with PlayStation Studios has been great over the past few years. The success and commercial success of the games they create allows us to invest a lot of money in content creation. ”

He added: "We are expanding our studios in an orderly manner and growing through acquisitions. We acquired 5 studios during 2021 and we are in discussions with Bungie and have more plans. This will lead us into a virtuous circle in which success leads to success. ”

The executive also reiterated why Sony decided not to include first-day releases in its new subscription service, as Xbox Game Pass did, claiming that such a setup would compromise the quality of the game.

"The games we make are getting bigger and bigger; They're getting better and better, they're getting prettier, they're getting richer, the stories are getting stronger and stronger, and it's really great that players tell us that's what they want from playStation.

"Now, I have to say that turning a game into a subscription service immediately after its release will break this virtuous circle and we won't be able to invest in the way it is currently." So we don't do that. We will continue to follow what has worked for many years. ”

In addition to acquiring the studio, Sony is also investing in PS5 exclusivity by partnering with several promising independent studios.
