Bad with BMW? The Toyota GR86 measured data was pointed out to underreport horsepower data

The new Toyota GR86 is undoubtedly a rather fun sports car, although it is not turbocharged, but with a new 2.4-liter engine, not only the displacement is increased, but even the horsepower and output curve are better than the previous generation. But the official data is always just a number, what is the actual horsepower of the GR86?

The GR86 is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder horizontal symmetrical engine code-named FA24, with a power output of 228 hp/25.4 kg-m (235 ps/25.5 kg-m for the Japanese model). But after actual testing, it seems that this is not the case.

YouTube channel FTspeed recently got a 2022 GR86 and went to the Paragon Performance modification plant and drove a horsepower test to see if the actual horsepower figure of the GR86 was suspected of being falsely reported. The GR86 only traveled 500 miles (about 800 kilometers) on the odometer at the time, and a total of 7 tests were carried out on the horsepower machine.

During the pull-horsepower test, the GR86's horsepower and torque data slowly increased, and in the last test, the GR86 produced 215.54 hp and 23.6 kg-m (231.7 Nm) of torque on the rear wheel. Converting the losses in the middle of the drivetrain back, the GR86's engine appears to produce more than 250 hp, well above the 228 hp indicated on the data.

In the film, however, the host notes that he tested his old Lion FR-S (the previous 86 Twin) on the same horsepower machine, making 170.95hp and 19.6kg-m (192Nm) of torque, which means that the new GR86 actually adds 45hp more horsepower than the previous model, and about 4kg-m (40 Nm) of extra torque.

However, in fact, on another Toyota sports car, the Supra, it was also found that there seemed to be a case of under-reporting horsepower, but because the engine body was provided by BMW's B58 straight-six engine, and BMW has always had a "previous record" of under-report engine output, everyone did not think so. The GR86, which was now developed with Subaru, has actually understated the data, which may also make many prospective owners have "Ah! It's more motivating than I thought it would be."
