"Waste Research Institute" is a puppet studio founded by Yu Shuang, Yu Lei, Yan Xingwang, three young people who love art, due to similar interests, at the end of 2020, 3 people from different professions participated in the entrepreneurship competition in the form of a team, and the prototype of "Waste Research Institute" was born.
The competition won the prize, and their studio was naturally established in early 2021 at the Jing'an Youth Entrepreneurship Incubation Park, where the 30-square-meter studio could receive government rent subsidies.
The idea of the three is to make their favorite puppets, go on stage, and get everyone's attention. The creative design of the competition, "Bossa and the Fish and the Bird", was implemented as their first project.
"Some of the stage props that were well done, after one or two performances, were thrown away. That kind of thing also took a lot of energy to do well, and finally in order to throw these things away and spend extra money to deal with them, we felt very wasteful, and we felt that we could take it back and reuse it. Member Yu only described the original intention of the establishment of the "Waste Research Institute".
After a simple division of labor, the studio was up and running. Yu is the only one in charge of business docking and other affairs, Yu Lei is responsible for art design and prop production, and Yan Xingwang is partial to the production of "even" and "organ".
There is no start-up capital, the effect and cost need to be weighed, and most of the materials used to make puppets are picked up or picked up by them. They have a special group, where the demolition, Yu Lei will go to the old house to pick and choose. The alley is piled with discarded old objects, valuable ones have been taken away, and there may be favorite "treasures" among the remaining garbage. In the field of "turning waste into treasure", Yu Lei has a lot of experience. In the four years he attended college at the Shanghai Theater Academy, he always went to the cultural commercial building to buy materials, and he became acquainted with many shopkeepers. In 2019, Yu Lei, who has graduated, built a small shop on the second floor that "can only stand five people at most", and has since had his own model store.
"At first, there was only model material, and then I experimentally put some small doll toys that I had collected before, and they sold out in almost a week, so I thought everyone should still like these things." Later, Yu Lei managed to put out more and more "waste", and the type of "waste" became more and more "uninhibited".
Because of the special temperament of Yu Lei model shop, in addition to the people who come to consume, there are also various "big gods" who come to exchange goods and exchange artistic experience. A teacher from the Academy of Fine Arts came to the store to look for materials and gadgets, and specially made a few handmade grasshoppers to exchange.
Yu Lei and two others also met in the store, in a sense, this small shop is the waste research institute "where the dream began".
At the end of October 2021, the lease of the model shop expired, and Yu Lei decided to transfer the valuable "savings" of the store for many years to the studio, "after that, it is the main position." ”
Some of the "waste" removed from the model shop on the 2nd floor of the Cultural Commercial Building was not fully "familiar" with the environment of studio at No. 158 Hanzhong Road, so it was "selected" as stage props and puppet materials, and moved to the Jiejiele (Shanghai) Culture and Art Center in Qingpu.
