Earlier, Sony abruptly announced the acquisition of Bungie, the game developer of the Destiny series, as a major move to counter Microsoft. However, in the latest conference call, Sony executives clarified that the acquisition has been talked about for several months and is not aimed at Microsoft.
Sony Finance Officer Hiroki Totoki said: "In addition to obtaining the Destiny series and the new IP being developed, the acquisition of Bungie will also gain the "connected service game" technology and knowledge owned by Bungie, and through the cooperation with PlayStation Studios, it is expected to launch more than 10 connected games around 2026.
We know: Microsoft owns "Minecraft", "Sea of Thieves" and other well-known works, and then obtained the "Call of Duty" series from Activision Blizzard, which are works that support multiplayer online, while Sony itself lacks similar works, and the current main one is still a single-player-based AAA masterpiece.
Sony desperately needs to make up for the lack of multiplayer, and it's been learned that Naughty Dog and Horizon developer Guerrilla are both working on multiplayer versions!
