On January 20, the State Administration for Market Regulation held a special press conference to introduce the recall of domestic automobiles. According to the data, in 2021, the mainland implemented a total of 232 car recalls, involving 8.73 million vehicles, and the number of recalls increased by 29% year-on-year. By the end of 2021, a total of 91.3 million vehicles have been recalled in China.

From the perspective of the reasons for the recall, 84% of the total number of recalls due to defects in engines and electronic and electrical components. From the perspective of defect recall reasons, those recalled due to manufacturing reasons accounted for 15% of the total recalled quantity; those recalled due to design reasons accounted for 85% of the total recalled quantity.

Among them, there were 10 OTA recalls, involving 2.92 million defective vehicles, most of which were completed 90% in 3 months, and the completion rate of automobile recalls increased significantly. This is a good phenomenon, the State Administration for Market Regulation encourages enterprises to use OTA to implement recalls, but whether it is OTAs as a recall measure or technical service activities, enterprises must fulfill statutory obligations such as filing, and can better protect public safety and consumer rights and interests.

Although the press conference did not name car companies, data show that Mercedes-Benz launched a total of 15 recalls in China in 2021, recalling 2778791 vehicles, of which the largest single recall exceeded 2.6 million, which can be called the "king of recalls" in China.
