A few days ago, the State Administration for Market Regulation released car recall statistics in 2021, and a total of 44 car brands in the domestic passenger car market issued 155 recall announcements in 2021, with a total of 8733735 passenger cars recalled, an increase of 31.88% over 2020.

Judging from this published list, Mercedes-Benz has pushed the crowd to the top of the 2021 domestic recall list, and none of the three major German BBA brands with unique advantages in China have been spared from entering the top ten. Independent brand Wuling jumped to second place, while Tesla, whose ownership has soared in the past two years, is fourth.

So why are these brands being recalled? What is the necessary logic behind this?

Let's first look at the leaderboard winner , Mercedes-Benz. At the beginning of this year, Mercedes-Benz filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation, mainly because of the problem of communication module software, and began to recall some imported and domestic A-class, B-class, C-class, E-class, S-class, GLA SUV, GLB SUV, GLC SUV, GLE SUV, GLS SUV, EQC vehicles in China, totaling more than 2.6 million vehicles.

The total number of vehicles and the number of vehicle categories involved in this recall is shocking, and throughout the year, Mayfly has recalled a total of 2781204 passenger cars on 17 occasions, and the frequency of recalls is equally staggering.

BMW and Audi, which are also German mid-to-high-end brands, have a total of nearly 700,000 vehicles recalled, but compared with Mercedes-Benz's more than 2.7 million vehicles, it is obvious that it is not even a fraction of it.

Speaking of recalls, BMW's recall is mainly due to airbag safety issues and poor welding quality at the pins of the internal contact system of the power battery of the new energy model IX3; Audi is mainly due to sunroof leakage and transmission control unit defects.

Let's take a look at Wuling in second place, and Wuling Automobile, the light of domestic goods, ranks second in the annual recall list as an independent brand. It is reported that SAIC-GM-Wuling recalled a total of more than 1.43 million vehicles due to insufficient wear resistance of the forced ventilation valve spool of the engine crankcase, which may cause engine damage in extreme cases, which is also the first case of related recall after the official implementation of the Regulations on the Administration of Motor Vehicle Emission Recalls.

In addition, judging from the complaints of the car quality network, all the models of Baojun under Wuling have some transmission caton faults, and the problems such as abnormal sound of the steering system are more concentrated.

Toyota Motor, the third largest, recalled models mainly include RAV4 Rongfang, Asia Dragon, Camry and Lexus. Recall notices were issued in March, June, and July 2021. The reasons involved include the engine's low-pressure fuel pump impeller parts not meeting OEM standards, and in extreme cases, the engine will suddenly shut down.

After Tesla's sales soared, so did the recall

After talking about traditional car brands, let's take a look at new energy vehicle brands, the first to bear the brunt is Tesla, which ranks fourth with more than 540,000 vehicles.

On the one hand, this is a strong confirmation of Tesla's soaring sales last year, on the other hand, it also reflects that Tesla still has a long way to go in the car-making process.

While sales have reached a new high, Tesla's product problems have also been revealed, and in 2021, Tesla has carried out a total of 6 recalls in China 543811 electric vehicles, far exceeding the recall level in 2020.

Tesla, which originally thought it could survive the 2021 shutdown, did not expect to lose on the last day. On December 31, 2021, Tesla announced a total of three recalls.

They are partially imported Model S from January 21, 2015 to November 18, 2020, totaling 19,697 units; partial imports of Model 3 electric vehicles from October 4, 2018 to November 20, 2019, totaling 35,836 units; and some domestically produced Model 3 electric vehicles from October 14, 2019 to December 27, 2020, totaling 144208.

Among them, the reason for the recall of the imported Model S is that the vehicle may have a slightly backward alignment of the front trunk lock latch and the lock buckle, which may lead to problems with the primary and secondary lock latches, and the front trunk cover may suddenly open during the vehicle's driving, affecting the driver's line of sight.

Model 3 models This is due to the vehicle trunk after a long period of repeated opening and closing, which may cause excessive wear of the trunk wiring harness. If this wear causes the core of the coaxial cable to separate, it may cause the reversing image to not work properly.

Future recalls will focus on technology and three-electric components

With the development of the Internet of Vehicles technology, the new technology parts related to intelligent networking are increasingly used in various models, and it is precisely because of the increasing popularity that the complaint rate of this type of parts and components is much higher than before.

Participants such as the 4S dealer system authorized by the main engine factory and the spare parts dealer with OEM supply chain cooperation agreement have technical advantages in the maintenance of the core components of the car.

From the trend point of view, most of the future recalls will be related to the three electric technology, network technology, and these failures in addition to the unified recall of the main engine factory, generally can only be upgraded and repaired through authorized dealers, social repair shops have no channels, let alone technology to do this kind of maintenance.

Therefore, although the 4S system still holds certain technical barriers in many aspects, because the maintenance business scope of its core components is limited to the designated brand, the overall influence on the automobile maintenance and repair market is relatively limited, which is significantly different from the social repair shop that eats hundreds of meals and repairs hundreds of cars.
