Accidentally slipped on his father's shoulder and fractured the skull of a 3-year-old child in Changsha

Many children in life like to ride on the shoulders of their parents to play "riding a high horse", as everyone knows, such parent-child behavior is actually very hidden dangers. On the afternoon of January 8, Mr. Li, who lives in Yuhua District, carried his 3-year-old son Han Han (pseudonym) to play "riding a high horse" to visit the mall, because the child accidentally slipped off, his whole body fell directly on the ground with his head back, and he was rushed to the emergency department of Changsha Central Hospital (Changsha Central Hospital affiliated to the University of South China) Children's Medical Center. After examination, the child was diagnosed with a fracture of the temporal parietal bone on the right side, scalp hematoma, and intracranial gas, and after active treatment, the child has now turned the crisis into safety.

It is understood that on January 8, Mr. Li's family took their children out to play, and 3-year-old Han Han could not walk after playing for a few hours. Mr. Li, the father, lifted the child up and rode on his neck. After walking for a while, the child may have seen something interesting, released his father's hand, leaned back instantly, accidentally slipped off his father's shoulder, and hit the ground. The wife on the side quickly picked up the child to comfort her, found that the child had nosebleeds, and said that her head was very painful, so she immediately drove to the hospital for treatment.

"When the child is admitted to the hospital, a mass about 5×5 cm in size can be reached on the top of the right temporal cavity, with a small amount of bleeding in the nasal cavity, accompanied by headache symptoms. After the emergency cranial CT examination for the child, it was found that the right temporal parietal bone fracture, scalp hematoma, and intracranial gas accumulation were considered to be caused by a fall in the head, and we immediately asked pediatric neurosurgery experts to consult and admitted the traumatic brain injury to the pediatric intensive care unit. According to Liu Xiaoyan, deputy chief physician of the Children's Medical Center of Changsha Central Hospital (Changsha Central Hospital affiliated to the University of South China), after symptomatic treatment such as hemostasis, brain protection, cranial pressure reduction, and maintenance of water-electrolyte balance, the child recovered well and is currently undergoing post-observation and rehabilitation treatment in the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit.

"The head is the 'life center' of a person, and a head fall cannot be judged by trauma alone, even if there is no obvious trauma and bleeding, it cannot be ignored." According to Deputy Chief Physician Liu Xiaoyan, some intracranial injuries are likely to be asymptomatic at the beginning, but 3-6 hours and 72 hours after the fall are the dangerous periods for late intracranial hemorrhage, so it may be too late to wait until the symptoms appear. It is recommended that parents should be sent to the hospital in time after the child falls on the head, it is worth noting that even if the first admission to the hospital to check the head CT shows normal, they should also follow the doctor's advice, and re-examine the head CT again 3-6 hours and 72 hours after the injury, and then discharge after the observation period has passed.

Liu Xiaoyan, deputy chief physician, reminds parents that when interacting with children at home, they should pay more attention to safety, and prevention is the key, such as "riding a high horse" game, if the parents have slippery hands or unstable center of gravity, or the child is too excited and active, it is possible to catch the child, resulting in the child falling, resulting in the child's head and body injuries. While accompanying their children's growth, parents should try to stay away from parent-child games that contain risk factors to avoid accidents.
