The target he wanted to assassinate was not only a court official, but also Zhou Jitong, the grandson of Emperor Taizong of Tang and Li Shimin.
Why did Du Du, the second uncle of "Shi Sheng" Du Fu, leave a good life and go to kill this heavenly and noble Lord Zhou? All this has to start with Du Fu's grandfather Du Zhenyan.
A good start doesn't necessarily have good results
Du Zhenyan (c. 645-708), a Tang Dynasty native of Xiangyang,Xiangzhou (present-day Xiangyang, Hubei), later made his father Du Yiyi a lieutenant in Gong County, Henan, and the old Du family moved to Gong County, Henan to settle down. Du Zhenyan had four sons, the eldest son Du Xian (du Fu's father), the second son Du He, the third son Du Zhuan, and the fourth son Du Deng.
In 670, at the age of twenty-five, Du Zhenyan entered the high school and was appointed as a lieutenant of Kuicheng County. In that era of "Thirty Old Ming Classics, Fifty Young Scholars", Du Zhenyan, who was in his twenties, was able to enter the army and the first, and later he was called "The Four Friends of the Article" with Li Zhao, Cui Rong, and Su Wei, which can be seen that he was also a scholar-level figure.
But a good start is not necessarily half the success, And Du Zhenyan, who was admitted to the jinshi, has been in the official arena for nearly twenty years, and the official position is either a county lieutenant or a county clerk, which is basically not much different from twenty years ago. In 689, nineteen years had passed since he had stepped into his career, and this time the place where he was going to take office was Jiangyin, and his position was still the same as that of Jiangyin County, and Du Zhenyan was quite uncomfortable.
On this day, Lu Cheng of Jinling (present-day Changzhou) County accompanied Du Zhenyan to the outskirts of the countryside to relax his heart, and also wrote a poem "Early Spring Tour" for him, and Du Zhenyan also sang and sang a song "And Jinling Lu Cheng Early Spring Tour" to his friend Lu Cheng:
Unique eunuch tourists, partial shock phenology new.
Yunxia out of the sea dawn, Mei Liu crossed the river in spring.
Lady's breath promotes yellow birds, and the clear light turns to green apples.
Overhearing the ancient tune of the song, I want to dip the towel.
The gist of the poem is as follows: Only those who are far away from their hometowns and become officials outside will be particularly sensitive to the changes in natural things; the clouds appear on the sea, the rising sun is about to rise in the east, the south of the river is already plum red and willow green, but the north of the river has just returned to spring; in the warm spring light, the yellow warbler birds have also begun to sing, and under the clear sun, the color of the green apples has turned deeper; today I suddenly heard you chanting a simple song, which aroused my thoughts about my hometown and I was full of tears.
It seems that Du Zhenyan is really miserable enough, and he has not been promoted for twenty years. But as the saying goes, there must be something hateful about the poor man, and it is he who is the one who causes this predicament.
There is no one in sight, arrogant and arrogant
After Du Zhenyan entered the army in high school, he was proud of his talents and had no one in sight. When Su Wei, one of the "Four Friends of the Article", was a Heavenly Official Waiter, Du Zhenyan went to take the official pre-selection examination, and after handing in the examination paper and leaving the examination room, Du Zhenyan said triumphantly: This Su Wei will undoubtedly die.
The people around them were stunned, thinking that the examiner Su Wei had some terminal illness, and asked Du Zhenyan what was going on? Du Zhenyan said solemnly: When Su Wei saw the test paper I wrote, he would definitely feel that his level was inferior to mine, and then he would die in shame. The crowd was speechless.
If Su Wei is an official who does not learn and has no skills, and relies on nepotism to go to the door, Du Zhenyan has no objection to this. Although Later Du Zhenyan's grandchildren produced a "poetic saint" Du Fu, Su Wei's descendants produced Su Xun, Su Shi, and Su Rui's "Three Fathers and Sons of Su Men", which is not to mention more than one.
Du Zhenyan's arrogance and conceit have not changed at all, and he once said in front of everyone: It is not my old Du bragging, Qu Yuan and Song Yu should be glad that they were not born in the same era as me, otherwise after reading my articles, they are only worthy of being my entourage, Wang Xizhi saw the calligraphy I wrote, and they must honestly be my students.
Du Zhenyan's unique speech and demeanor soon won the "praise" among colleagues, and in 698 AD, Du Zhenyan was demoted to Jizhou Sihu to join the army, and it was not long before he offended Sihu Guo Ruoner again. Guo Ruone was angry, but ran to Zhou Jitong to file a complaint, Zhou Jitong had long wanted to clean up Du Zhenyan, the "first fast mouth of the Tang Dynasty", and the two conspired to frame Du Zhenyan and also sentenced him to death, which could be clean.
Arrogant and wrong, but let his son die tragically
Du Zhenyan did not expect that his quick words had brought him the disaster of killing himself, and the price he paid in the end was his son's life.
Du Jiyan's second son, Du He, who was only thirteen years old at the time, learned that his father had been wrongfully imprisoned and sentenced to death, so he began to prepare to avenge his father.
On July 12, 699, taking advantage of the lively banquet of the Zhou Mansion, Du secretly mixed a sharp blade in his sleeve and sneaked into the Zhou Mansion. Just when everyone was unprepared for the wine, Du He suddenly pulled out the short knife in his sleeve and pounced on Zhou Jitong. Soon, Du He was captured by the guards in the palace and hacked to death on the spot, but Zhou Jitong was also stabbed by Du He, although he was not killed at that time, he was seriously injured, and soon he was also killed. Before dying, Zhou Jitong said, "I didn't know that Du Zhenyan had such a filial son, and it was Guo Ruoner who killed me." ”
This assassination shocked the government and the public, and everyone praised Du as a great filial piety, and Su Yong, the Duke of Xuguo at that time, personally wrote an epitaph for Du and Du.
When Wu Zetian heard about this, she acquitted Du Zhenyan and prepared to re-appoint him, and she summoned Du Zhenyan to the front and asked, "Are you happy?" Of course, Wu Zetian did not ask him how his son felt when he died, but asked him how he felt after washing away his grievances. Du Zhenyan danced to thank the Lord Long en, and Wu Zetian said, "Since you are happy, write a "Joyful Poem" for me." ”
Du Zhenyan was really embarrassed at this time, and the tragic death of his son was exchanged for his own rehabilitation, and now he still has to write "Joyful Poems" to express his gratitude to the big boss and his own joy. In the end, Lao Du still used his talent hard and wrote a "Joyful Poem".
Wu Zetian was optimistic about his articles, making him a writer lang, and later moved to the position of foreign lang of the catering department. Not long after, Du Zhenyan's old mistake was committed again, and he cleverly went to befriend Wu Zetian's male favorites Zhang Yizhi and Zhang Changzong, causing Wu Zetian to be angry and exiled to Fengzhou (present-day Vietnam).
Shortly after his exile to Fengzhou, Du Zhenyan was recalled by the imperial court and appointed as the chief bookkeeper of the Guozi Supervisor and a scholar of Xiuwenguan.
In 708 AD, Du Zhenyan was dying on the bed, and his friends Song Zhiqing and Wu Pingyi went to visit him and asked him what he wanted to say, but as a result, Du Zhenyan could not change his unobstructed problems until his death, and he said to his friends who came to visit:
"Creation and manipulation, killing my son, hurting me so much, what is there to say, when I was here before, I could not suppress you, and now that I am going to die, you can be happy, but unfortunately no talented person can take over my position." 」
Four years after this sentence was said, Du Zhenyan's grandson was born and named Du Fu.
