In 1930, in order to maintain his family, Xu Zhimo went to Teach at Peking University and Beijing Women's University. But Lu Xiaoman did not want to go north, and Xu Zhimo could only travel between Beijing and Shanghai. The following winter, on the way to Beijing, Xu Zhimo's postal plane was hit by an air crash in Jinan, Shandong Province.
However, when the telegram of Xu Zhimo's death was sent to Lu Xiaoman, Lu Xiaoman refused to go and bury her husband's body. Soon, she packed up her things and ran away from home.
