Jinxiao Detachment of the New Fourth Army: The detachment leader is a colonel, and why is the chief of staff a founding lieutenant general

The Jinxiao Detachment of the New Fourth Army is a heroic unit active in Xiaoshan, Jinhua, Yiwu, Pujiang, Zhuji and other places in Zhejiang during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression! The team initially consisted of just over 100 men, but after hundreds of battles, it grew to thousands and was incorporated into a major regiment of the Third Field Army. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, this unit produced a large number of founding heroes. As for this article, I would like to focus on the two leaders of this detachment, Cai Qunfan and Peng Lin.

According to statistics, our party has successively dispatched nearly a thousand soldiers and local cadres to the eastern Zhejiang region to open up new anti-Japanese base areas. Among them, the more famous ones are: He Kexi, Tan Qilong, Lian Baisheng, Zhu Renjun, Zhang Wenbi, Xie Zhongliang, Liu Hengyun, Cai Qunfan, Huang Zhizhen... After this team came to eastern Zhejiang, it won many battles and quickly developed into a brigade-level unit, with He Kexi as commander and Tan Qilong as political commissar, which was the predecessor of the guerrilla column in eastern Zhejiang of the New Fourth Army.

Cai Qunfan, a native of Yinxian County, Zhejiang Province, was born in Shanghai in 1915 to a family of clerks. In his early years, he studied at the prestigious Shanghai Sino-French School. At the beginning of 1936, under the leadership of our party, he began to participate in some anti-Japanese salvation movements. In 1938, he joined the Party for his outstanding performance. In the early stages of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he had been forming and developing the anti-Japanese armed forces in Shanghai, and had served as a member of the Pudong Working Committee and secretary of the Central Military Commission. In June 1941, he was ordered to lead hundreds of warriors to eastern Zhejiang.

Because of his meritorious service in battle, Cai Qunfan was soon reappointed as the commander of the brigade, the political commissar of the detachment, and the chief of staff of the Three North Guerrilla Command. In December 1943, he and Yang Siyi and others led more than 130 commanders and fighters to Zhuji, Yiwu and other places in Zhejiang To form the main anti-Japanese force in the Jin (Hua) Xiao (Shan) area. Subsequently, based on this unit, he incorporated some local anti-Japanese armed forces and merged them into the famous Jinxiao Detachment of the New Fourth Army. According to statistics, this force has a total of about 500 people.

At the same time, Peng Lin, the old Red Army, also formed some anti-Japanese armed forces in Wuxing, Yiwu and other places in Zhejiang. He is a native of Ji'an, Jiangxi, born in 1914. He came from a poor background, so he joined the Red Army at the age of 16. Before the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he participated in the famous Long March and served as the political commissar of the Model Division of the Red Sixth Army. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he was ordered to work in the western Zhejiang region. By 1944, the Yiwu Independent Brigade under his command had grown to 300 men.

In 1944, Peng Lin led this team into the Jinxiao Detachment of the Zhejiang East Guerrilla Column of the New Fourth Army. The Jinxiao detachment consisted of a total of 1,000 people, with Cai Qunfan as the detachment leader, Yang Si as the political commissar, and Zhong Fazong as the director of the political office. The whole army had two brigades and an independent brigade, and Peng Lin first served as the leader of the independent brigade, and soon became the chief of staff of the Jinxiao detachment. In June of the same year, the whole army was downsized into the first and second brigades. In 1945, Cai Qunfan led the main force to leave the Jinxiao area.

After Cai Qunfan led the main force to leave Zhuji, Peng Lin and Yang Siyi rebuilt the Jinxiao detachment of the New Fourth Army in The village of Tainan in Zhuji. The rebuilt team had three squadrons under its jurisdiction, with Peng Lin as the detachment leader and Yang Siyi as the political commissar, and continued to fight in the Jinxiao area. According to statistics, the Jinxiao detachment of the New Fourth Army and some local armed forces under its command fought hundreds of battles with the Japanese, puppet, and stubborn troops, annihilating more than 2,000 enemy troops in total, and capturing more than 700 long and short guns and more than 30 light and heavy machine guns.

From the beginning of the founding of the army to the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Jinxiao Detachment of the New Fourth Army participated in hundreds of large and small battles. Due to space limitations, I will only introduce some of the classic examples for the time being. In August 1945, Peng Lin led his troops to repeatedly attack the Japanese puppet army in Sanjiangkou, Meichi Town, Xiaoshun Town in Jinhua, Jieting in Zhuji, Wangjia, and Luqiaolu in Zhuji. In less than half a month, our army annihilated no less than 200 Japanese puppet troops and captured more than 100 long and short guns.

After the end of the War of Resistance, the unit was ordered to withdraw north. In Shangyu, Zhejiang, the Jinxiao detachment was reorganized into the sixth detachment of the Zhejiang Eastern Guerrilla Column of the New Fourth Army. In October 1945, the sixth detachment crossed Hangzhou Bay in the north and then came to central China. In November, this unit and the third detachment of the former Zhejiang East Guerrilla Column of the New Fourth Army were merged into the Eighth Regiment of the Third Brigade of the First Column of the Jinpu Front Field Army of the New Fourth Army. The brigade was headed by Zhang Yixiang, He Kexi as political commissar, and Cai Qunfan as commander of the Eighth Regiment.

In the Liberation War, the Eighth Regiment of the Third Brigade of the First Column successively participated in the famous Battle of Subei, the Battle of Lunan, the Battle of Laiwu, the Battle of Menglianggu, the Battle of Eastern Henan, the Battle of Huaihai, and the Battle of Crossing the River. This unit fought in the south and the north, made countless contributions, and emerged countless combat heroes and martyrs. In 1949, the first column was reorganized into the 20th Army of the Third Field Army, and the Eighth Regiment was reorganized into the 179th Regiment of the 60th Division of the 20th Army, and Zhang Jilun served as the commander of this regiment.

In addition, it is added that before the end of the War of Resistance, Cai Qunfan led the main force of the Jinxiao detachment to leave the Jinxiao area. After the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Peng Lin and his troops also left the Jinxiao area and crossed the sea north to central China. Subsequently, Jiang Mingda and Zhang Fan and others formed the Jinxiao Detachment again in 1948. By the time of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the force had grown from more than 200 to more than 4,000. In May 1949, this unit was ordered to abolish its establishment and gloriously fulfill its historical mission!

In 1950, the 20th Army, led by its commander Jang Yi-cheung, came to the Korean battlefield. Among them, the 179th Regiment, under the leadership of regimental commander Zhang Jilun, successively participated in the famous Second Battle of Qiancikai, the Battle of WumaZhi, and the Battle of Jixiong Mountain in Qianfo Mountain. In the famous Battle of Chosin Lake, the regiment had a deputy company commander named Shou Zhigao, who led 26 commanders and fighters to block hundreds of American troops with their flesh and blood. In the end, all 27 warriors died heroically!

On November 28, 1950, the 179th Regiment of the 20th Army of the Volunteer Army launched the famous Battle of Changshunli. In this battle, our army blocked hundreds of enemy troops with a single company. At the same time, the other units of the 179th Regiment completely divided and surrounded these enemy forces with lightning speed. This enemy army had no way to the sky and no door to the ground, and launched many counterattacks in succession, all of which were repelled by our army. In the end, under the persuasion of our army, more than 240 enemy troops laid down their weapons.

After returning to China, the 60th Division threw in one regiment after another and participated in the famous Battle of Liberating Yijiangshan Island. With the cooperation of the Navy, the Air Force, and other fraternal units, our army bravely marched forward, liberated Yijiangshan Island in less than half a day, and annihilated more than 1,000 enemy troops. The chairman exclaimed: The landing battle on Yijiangshan Island was fought very well! Regrettably, however, the combatants were all commanders and fighters of the 178th Regiment and the second battalion of the 180th Regiment, which did not participate directly in the fighting.

In these battles and battles, countless heroes and martyrs have emerged in this unit, among which the more famous martyrs are: Yu Mugeng, former second captain of the independent brigade of the Jinxiao detachment of the New Fourth Army and chief of staff of the ninth regiment of the first column; Zhu Xuemian, captain of the first brigade of the Jinxiao detachment; Weng Pinggui, deputy commander of a certain unit of the Jinxiao detachment; Shou Zhigao, deputy company commander of a certain unit of the 179th regiment; Mao Xingbiao, deputy battalion commander of the second battalion of the 179th regiment; Ding Guotian, instructor of a company of the 179th regiment...

After that, this force was stationed in Zhejiang for a long time, and once returned to its origin area- Jinxiao area. In 1975, the 20th Army was ordered to leave Zhejiang and then came to the Central Plains. The 179th Regiment moved to Xinyang Minggang and was later incorporated into a composite brigade of the 83rd Army. At present, although this heroic force has not participated in the war again for a long time, its morale and combat effectiveness are still strong! When called, it can fight, and the battle will be won, it is said that this kind of ace troops are said!

According to statistics, the Jinxiao detachment of the New Fourth Army and its derivative units have produced many founding heroes, among which the more famous figures are: Peng Lin, the founding lieutenant general, the former political commissar of the Naval Aviation Department; Cai Qunfan, the founding colonel, the former deputy chief of staff of the Shanghai Garrison District; Zhong Fazong, the founding major general, the former director of the political department of the Zhejiang Provincial Military Region; Yang Siyi, who was not awarded a military rank, former vice governor of Zhejiang Province; Zhang Jilun, the founding colonel, who was promoted to colonel in 1964, and former chief of staff and deputy commander of the 12th Army.

In addition, there are: Wang Zhihua, founding colonel, who was promoted to the rank of colonel in 1960, former deputy political commissar of the Logistics Department of the Chengdu Military Region; Jiang Mingda, former deputy secretary of the Jiande Prefectural Committee of Zhejiang Province; Zhang Fan, who was not awarded the rank, former deputy director of the Zhejiang Provincial Machinery Department; Chen Yuka, who was not awarded the rank, former chief procurator of the Zhejiang Provincial Procuratorate; Ye Boshan, former secretary of the party committee of the China COSCO General Company of the Ministry of Communications; Du Chengjun, former director of the Zhejiang Provincial Tourism Bureau; Ma Qing, former deputy director of the Jiangxi Provincial Planning Commission...

Finally, let's talk about Cai Qunfan and Peng Lin, who both served as the detachment leaders of the Jinxiao detachment of the New Fourth Army. Moreover, Peng Lin was once Cai Qunfan's love general. However, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, Peng Lin was awarded the rank of lieutenant general, and Cai Qunfan was only awarded the rank of colonel. First of all, Peng Lin is an old Red Army, and his qualifications are far deeper than Cai Qunfan. Secondly, Peng Lin performed prominently during the Liberation War, he once served as the political commissar of the 32nd Army, and his position and military achievements also surpassed Cai Qunfan.
