Local police said the ferry caught fire in a river channel 200 kilometers south of the capital, Kada, as the boat was heading from Dhaka to Borguna in the south. Video from the scene shows the burning ships in flames in the darkness. After the fire was extinguished, the hull of the ship was scorched black.
When the fire broke out, many passengers jumped into the river to survive. One survivor recalled: "When I smelled burnt, I went out to check out, and when I found a fire, my family and I jumped into the river and swam ashore. ”
According to reference sources, rescuers have found 37 bodies and rescued 72 injured passengers, while rescue missions are still ongoing and the death toll is likely to rise.
