All-round electrification + full life cycle carbon neutrality Toyota is committed to contributing to China's "blue sky and white clouds"

At present, environmental pollution and ecological damage are serious worldwide, and the impact of human activities on the global climate has also made the impact of the climate crisis larger.

According to reports released in the recently concluded Conference of the Parties to the Twenty-sixth Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, global average temperatures (January-September) in 2021 were about 1.09 degrees Celsius higher than they were in 1850-1900, and are currently listed by the World Meteorological Organization as the sixth or seventh warmest year on record in the world. The deterioration of the climate situation has led to the frequent occurrence of extreme weather around the world. Since the beginning of this year, people in many countries around the world have also experienced the deterioration of the climate and the extreme weather that they visit from time to time.

In the face of the impact of extreme weather and climate change, countries around the world are actively negotiating solutions, and "carbon neutrality" has become a global consensus. As a responsible major country, after proposing the goal of achieving "carbon peaking" by 2030 and achieving "carbon neutrality" by 2060, China has successively issued the "Opinions on The Complete, Accurate and Comprehensive Implementation of the New Development Concept to Achieve Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality" and the "Carbon Peaking Action Plan before 2030", which is forming a "1+ N" policy system of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and clarifying the timetable, road map and construction drawings.

In this context, as a major carbon emitter, automakers are also actively taking action to explore carbon reduction paths and help achieve the "double carbon" goal, and Toyota Motor is one of the representatives. In fact, as a global 10 million-vehicle scale car company, Toyota has a deep accumulation in the field of environmental protection.

As early as 2015, Toyota announced the "Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050" strategy, proposing to "reduce the average CO2 emissions of new vehicles worldwide by 90% by 2050 (compared with 2010)". At present, in the face of China's "double carbon" goal, Toyota, which has been deeply involved in the Chinese market for many years, is also contributing to China's environmental protection and the realization of the "carbon neutrality" goal with practical actions.

All-round approach to electrification to help the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

Industry analysts believe that new energy vehicles are the only way to achieve "carbon neutrality" in the field of road transportation. Because of this, the transformation to the new energy field has become the consensus of car companies.

Compared with other car companies, Toyota has insisted on moving toward electrification with a full range of technologies, adopting a parallel route of HEV, PHEV, EV, and FCEV. According to public data, as of now, Toyota's cumulative sales of HEVs have exceeded about 18 million units. According to calculations, from the perspective of carbon dioxide emission reduction effect, Toyota's more than 18 million HEV emission reduction effect ≈ 5.5 million EV, but from the perspective of battery load, more than 18 million HEVs are only equivalent to 260,000 EV, which is one of the reasons why Toyota adheres to all-round electrification technology.

Some market reports believe that in the short term, the field of new energy vehicles will pay equal attention to pure electricity and hybrid demand, and electrification will continue to accelerate development.

During this year's Shanghai Auto Show, Toyota unveiled a new all-electric exclusive series "TOYOTA bZ" and exhibited the first concept car of the series, the TOYOTA bZ4X CONCEPT. By 2025, the bZ series plans to launch seven pure electric models, five of which will be introduced to the Chinese market, including models developed by Toyota and BYD. The first car in the series will be produced in China and Japan, and global sales are expected to reach by mid-2022.

According to the plan, by 2025, Toyota will launch 15 EV models worldwide. In the Chinese market, by 2025, Toyota and Lexus brands will introduce 35 new electrified models, including 10 EV models; by 2025, Toyota plans to account for 50% of electrified vehicles in China.

In addition to pure electric products, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are also an important part of Toyota's contribution to "carbon neutrality" with low-carbon travel solutions. On November 12, Toyota and the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee jointly held the delivery ceremony of service vehicles for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. As a global partner in the field of mobility for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Toyota will help the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games with its hydrogen fuel cell models as its core all-round electrified mobility products, and contribute its strength to the "Green Olympic Games, Science and Technology Olympic Games".

It is reported that Toyota provided more than 2,200 event service vehicles for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, including Toyota's FCEV "Second Generation MIRAI", which was first used in China on a large scale, the "Costa Hydrogen Engine" developed for the conference, and a variety of EV and HEV models. In addition, as a result of Toyota's cooperation with Beijing Motor Co., Ltd. and Beijing Yihuatong Technology Co., Ltd., about 200 Beiqi Foton hydrogen fuel cell buses equipped with Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell system will be used at the Winter Olympics.

Cooperate with Chinese enterprises to contribute to the whole life cycle carbon neutrality

Toyota understands that carbon neutrality cannot be achieved by vehicle technology progress alone, because the automotive industry must reduce carbon dioxide emissions from all aspects of vehicle production, use and recycling. To this end, Toyota strives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from manufacturing, storage, use, recycling, and disposal from a life-cycle perspective.

At the same time, Toyota is also contributing to China's carbon neutrality from LCA in all aspects, and actively promoting CO2 in production, distribution stores, battery recycling and other fields

Emission reductions, specific measures include promoting new factories and R&D CO2 emission reductions, reducing waste amounts, using green electricity, reducing CO2 emissions from bicycles produced in factories by 46% and reducing waste by 88% in 2020 (compared with 2006); promoting the use of green electricity in core dealerships and promoting energy-saving measures to about 1,500 dealerships nationwide; developing waste battery recycling and reuse business, "not letting one battery cause pollution", etc.

In the process, toyota is also looking to partner with like-minded Chinese companies, adhering to the philosophy of being rooted in the local area and becoming the best local company.

Taking hydrogen fuel cell technology as an example, at the use level, Toyota and Chinese partners have jointly developed the TL Power 100, a high-power, long-lasting hydrogen fuel cell system suitable for the use environment of Commercial Vehicles in China; at the level of recycling, Toyota and Chinese companies have begun to cooperate in researching the proper disposal method of FCEV scrapped vehicles and the resource recycling of core components.

While promoting the carbon neutrality of the whole life cycle of the industry, Toyota has also carried out a series of social welfare activities around the core areas of "environmental protection, traffic safety, and talent training" to contribute to society. Among them, in terms of environmental protection, Toyota has successively carried out the Fengning Afforestation Project and the Toyota Longhua Sustainable Development Rural Project, which have made important contributions to local environmental protection.

With multiple measures at the same time, Toyota is carrying out extensive and in-depth cooperation through technological progress and the popularization of renewable energy from the perspective of the whole life cycle, and contributing its own strength to China's mobility field and China's blue sky and white clouds.
