When Hu Shi was 13 years old, she arranged for her son Zhang Luo to marry, and finally chose the daughter of a distant relative, Jiang Dongxiu, and in 1905, under the arrangement of the two families, Jiang Dongxiu and Hu Shi, who had never met before, were engaged.
In the second year of the engagement, Hu Shi began his long study career. In 1915, Hu Shi was admitted to Columbia University as a graduate student, and Roosevelt became an alumnus, studying under the philosopher Dewey. During his studies, Hu Shi met the professor's daughter Wei Liansi. For this relationship, Hu Shi can only swim between ambiguity and reticence for half a century. In 1917, Hu Shi returned from studying abroad and married Jiang Dongxiu. Hu Shi's cousin later recalled that the wedding was Western-style. It's eye-opening.
The following year, Hu Shi, who was the president of Peking University, brought his wife to Beijing, and the two began to live a life of male and female protagonists. In the autumn of 1923, when Hu Shi went to Hangzhou to recuperate his body, he suddenly fell in love with Jiang Dongxiu's distant cousin: Cao Chengying. Cao Chengying, who studied in Hangzhou, was entrusted by his cousin to take care of Hu Shi, and the two people's feelings quickly warmed up on the shore of the West Lake, and they loved to death and lived.
Not long after, Cao Chengying became pregnant with Hu Shi's child. Returning to Beijing, Hu Shi confessed to his wife that he wanted a divorce, and Jiang Dongxiu, who had a fiery temper, took his son and took a kitchen knife from the kitchen and said to her husband:
"If you dare to divorce, I will kill my two sons first, then kill you, and finally commit suicide!"
As a literati, Hu Shi was suddenly frightened, so he never thought of divorce again, but could only exchange letters with Cao Chengying. After Jiang Dongxiu found out, he did not get angry, but opened the window to read the contents of the letter aloud, and Hu Shi, who loved face, could only break off contact with Cao Chengying in the end. Cao Chengying was unmarried for Hu Shi's life.
Since then, Jiang Dongxiu's reputation as a humble woman has been very famous in Beijing's academic circles, and almost no one dares to make some different things around Hu Shi.
