It is inaccurate to position Wang Shuxiang's works as either traditional or modern, his paintings are somewhere in between, and seek a modern expression of traditional cultural heritage and a new spiritual context. A look at human nature and a vision of the future.
Whether from the tool material or aesthetic pointing, it is still a "Chinese painting" with an oriental aesthetic. That is to say, regardless of its painting language and the "creation" and "heart source" of the subject, it carries the "cultural genes" inherited from China and expresses the spiritual feelings that also have a clear modern orientation.
His work has a visual "hallucinogenicity" and a certain increasingly blurred, but still clearly recognizable memory and totem. The "shelf" schema he constructed and the grafting and transformation of the symbolic languages of the East and the West are all attempts to blur the visual conflict caused by the combination of the aesthetics of the two cultures. In the process of exploring its harmony, a new possibility is sought.
He is creating a "dream", with the "hallucinogenicity" of realistic vision in the representation and expression of objects. It's like a black cover, a line-bound book with unfinished red.
I like this expression, his "Han-Tang complex", and even more distant pre-Qin illusions, lonely and full.
