Du Yuming acquiesced in his men's surrender to our army, so why didn't they let Qiu Qingquan know?

One

In episode 43 of the CCTV hit TV series "The Great Armageddon", Du Yuming, deputy commander of Xuzhou's "Suppression General", led Three Corps of Qiu Qingquan, Sun Yuanliang, and Li Mi, totaling 300,000 people, to leave Xuzhou, and was surrounded by the East China Field Army at Chen Guanzhuang (present-day Chen Guanzhuang Township, Yongcheng, Shangqiu City, Henan Province).

Due to the setbacks in many breakthroughs and the serious lack of logistical support, the officers and men of the Nationalist army were panicked and secretly surrendered to the East China Field Army. Li Mi reflected this situation to Du Yuming: "Commander, there are many brothers who have already joined the Communist Party, and they still run back to win over other brothers, and the commanders don't care, what should we do about this matter?" ”

Du Yuming's answer was: "As long as they are unarmed, they will acquiesce in escaping." But don't let Commander Qiu know about this. ”

Du Yuming acquiesced in his men's surrender to our army, so why didn't they let Qiu Qingquan know?

Du Yuming is a kind person. He knew very well that after his troops were surrounded by the East China Field Army, the chances of being able to break through the siege were almost zero. Instead of letting everyone follow them to their deaths, it is better to let them have a way to live. However, why did Du Yuming put forward a special point and not let Qiu Qingquan know about this matter?

This is because Qiu Qingquan strongly advocated stubborn resistance to the end and would never allow his subordinates to surrender to the East China Field Army.

Two

Qiu Qingquan is a graduate of the second phase of the Whampoa Military Academy, and was sent to the German Army University for further study, and was the commander of the 5th Army, one of the five aces of the Nationalist Army, and was regarded as a concubine in the concubine line. Qiu Qingquan has a violent and arrogant personality, and the marching battle is extremely fierce.

In 1939, Qiu Qingquan served as the commander of the newly formed 22nd Division of the 5th Army of the Nationalist Army, and participated in the Battle of Kunlun Pass with the 5th Army, fighting against the 5th Division of the Japanese 21st Army. The Japanese army has more than 100 aircraft and more than 70 warships to cooperate in combat, and has absolute sea and air superiority and army equipment superiority, so it is destined to be a fierce and vicious battle.

During this period, Qiu Qingquan made a good claim to put the Japanese Infantry 21st Wing into Jiutang, then cut off the Rear Road of the Japanese Army, and then launched a fierce attack on the Japanese troops in the encirclement with tank troops, beating the Japanese Infantry 21st Regiment to collapse and the corpses were everywhere. Qiu Qingquan's tactics were unprecedented, so he was called "Qiu Crazy".

In the War of Liberation, Qiu Qingquan led the 5th Army to fight successively against the Central Plains Field Army and the East China Field Army, becoming a fierce enemy of our army. Of course, Qiu Qingquan did not take long to be beaten by the Central Plains Field Army and the East China Field Army. Especially in the Battle of Eastern Henan before the outbreak of the Huaihai Campaign, Qiu Qingquan was scolded for "getting along with friendly troops, not breaking the siege, not saving each other, and hating each other" because he sat by and watched the friendly huang Baitao's troops pay no attention to them, and had to risk his life to save Huang Baitao's troops.

After the Battle of Huaihai broke out, Qiu Qingquan's good days came to an end.

Three

In late November 1948, Du Yuming, deputy commander of the Xuzhou "Suppression General", left Xuzhou with 300,000 people from the 2nd, 13th, and 16th Corps, intending to rescue Huang Wei's 12th Corps, which was besieged by the Central Plains Field Army and the East China Field Army in Shuangduiji. Du Yuming did not expect that instead of rescuing Huang Wei, du Yuming became a "mud bodhisattva crossing the river, and it was difficult to protect himself", and after being surrounded and blocked by the East China Field Army, he was besieged at Chen Guanzhuang.

While strengthening the battlefield offensive, the East China Field Army wasted no time in persuading the officers and men of Du Yuming's clique to surrender. They released a controllable pass in the encirclement, set up several layers of firepower, and allowed the officers and soldiers and refugees inside to escape.

Du Yuming and Li Mi, out of the idea of reducing logistical pressure and humanitarianism, acquiesced in the surrender of their officers and men to our army. Li Mi once said to Huang Shu, commander of the 9th Army: "We must secretly explain to the commanders of the divisions, regiments, and battalions that if a soldier is willing to go to the communist army, he will go with him, and whether he comes back after eating enough, or if he does not come back, the only requirement is that he is not allowed to bring weapons." ”

In this way, in more than half a month, 14,000 officers and men of the Nationalist army quietly surrendered to our army, which was almost equivalent to the strength of two divisions.

Four

However, Qiu Qingquan would never allow his officers and men to surrender to the East China Field Army, and once discovered, he was immediately dealt with by military law.

At that time, our army wrote a letter to the senior generals of Du Yuming's clique, advising them to surrender at an early date: "Order your subordinates to stop resisting, effectively protect weapons and ammunition assets, and carry out organized surrender." As long as this can be done, our army should be able to ensure the safety of the lives of Ru and all officers and men. After Qiu Qingquan received the letter, it burned it immediately. After Li Mi received the letter, he forwarded it to Du Yuming. In order to test Qiu Qingquan's attitude, Du Yuming handed him the letter. Qiu Qingquan took it and burned it without saying a word.

Under these circumstances, even if Du Yuming acquiesced in the surrender of his officers and men to the East China Field Army, he would not let Qiu Qingquan know about it, lest he make trouble.

In fact, Qiu Qingquan also had the idea of surrender. Once, Qiu Qingquan said to Li Hanping, chief of staff of the 2nd Corps: "Only Europeans are the best at fighting, fighting if they win, and surrendering if they can't win." Unlike us in China, we know that we cannot fight, and we must continue to fight. ”

However, in the end, Qiu Qingquan still chose the path of stubborn resistance to the end. On January 10, 1949, when the East China Field Army launched its final general offensive, Qiu Qingquan was killed during the breakthrough at the age of 47.
