Microsoft Win11 Games supports several new features of auto HDR

IT House April 26 news, according to microsoft blog release, Microsoft today released a new Auto HDR feature on Windows 11, some of which will be used with the latest Xbox Game Bar in the Microsoft Store. Microsoft actually introduced automatic high dynamic range or auto HDR technology in the Windows 10 preview back in 2021, but unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, these new features are only available on Windows 11.

Some new features, including multi-GPU support for Nvidia SLI and AMD CrossFire, are also coming, but only available for Windows 11 Beta and Dev Insider channel releases.

Here's what's the specifics

Game Bar automatic HDR strength slider

Users can download the latest Xbox Game Bar from the Microsoft Store, which is available to all Windows 11 users.

The Auto HDR Intensity slider controls the vibrancy and brightness of colors in the game that users want to use Auto HDR. In games with extremely bright or dark colors, you can adjust the slider to your liking for the best auto HDR experience. If you drag the slider all the way to the left, you get the minimum intensity, which is equivalent to turning off auto HDR, and if you drag the slider all the way to the right, you get the full intensity of auto HDR.

To open the Xbox Game Bar, you can use the shortcut key Win+G. To use the strength slider, navigate to the Xbox Game Bar and click the Settings button. In Settings, click the Game Features section. In this section, the user will see a button that says Adjust HDR Intensity. When you click the button, a pop-up window appears with an intensity slider. If the user wants it to remain in the Xbox Game Bar overlay, they can pin it by pressing the Pin button in the upper-right corner. This allows the user to control the intensity of the colors in the game.

Note that this slider is only available for games with auto HDR, not for games with existing native HDR. Strength levels are saved each time, which means that users can set a certain intensity level for the AHDR for a particular game and will not affect any automatic HDR settings in other games. The next time you play the same game, the auto HDR slider remembers the previous settings.

Here's an example of adjusting the auto HDR intensity in your game in Minecraft Dungeons. Notice how the red strength of the tarp changes.

Xbox Game Bar Auto HDR checkbox

Users can download the latest Xbox Game Bar from the Microsoft Store, which is available to all Windows 11 users.

In addition to the Windows Settings app, users can now turn auto HDR on or off by accessing the Xbox Game Bar in the game. Navigate to the Xbox Game Bar and click the Settings button. In Settings, click the Game Features section. In that section, users will see a checkbox that shows Use automatic HDR with supported games. Make sure it's selected if you want to use automatic HDR, and uncheck it if you don't want to use automatic HDR. In order for the changes to take effect, the user needs to restart the game.

Multi-GPU compatibility

For Windows Insiders

Last year, Microsoft added automatic HDR support for multiple discrete GPU settings to DirectX12 games, such as Nvidia's Scalable Link Interface (SLI) and AMD's CrossFire. In other words, if the user has a setup that leverages multiple GPUs, automatic HDR can now be used in more games. This feature is currently available in the latest Windows Insider program releases in development and beta channels.

Customize automatic HDR notifications

For Windows Insiders

Finally, Microsoft listened to feedback on too many automated HDR notifications. If users find that automatic HDR notifications distract them from playing a game, they can be turned off in settings. Open the Windows Settings application, navigate to System, and then navigate to Notifications. There, the user will see a list of notifications from the app and other senders. If you want to turn off notifications, find Auto HDR and switch the switch to Off. Microsoft also offers the option to change settings so that notifications remain on but do not play a sound or display a notification banner. This feature is currently available in the latest Windows Insider program releases in Dev and Beta Channels.
