The new HDMI 2.1a standard is about to be released to enhance the HDR experience

CES 2022 will be officially held in Las Vegas, USA, from January 3 to 8, 2022 (January 3 to January 4, 2022, usually media day), with new developments in display interface standards in addition to the highly anticipated digital new products.

Before CES 2022 begins, HDMI regulator HMDI LA confirms that HDMI 2.1a, a new standard for HDMI 2.1, is about to be released, VideoCardz reported.

The new HDMI 2.1a standard is about to be released to enhance the HDR experience

According to reports, HDMI 2.1a will add new features of SBTM (Source-Based Tone Mapping) to enhance and optimize the HDR experience. The technology requires source and target devices to support the new standard, but HDMI LA expects many older devices to receive SBTM firmware updates in the future.

In simple terms, SBTM will benefit pc and gaming multi-window environments, and it will allow different windows to display both SDR and HDR-optimized content. SBTM is not intended to replace existing HDR technologies (e.g. HDR10, HLG), but to enrich the HDR experience by providing broader optimizations for HDR-capable devices.

SBTM also enables PCs and gaming devices to automatically generate optimized HDR signals to maximize the display's HDR capabilities without the need to manually configure the device.
