CNMO News Recently, industry analyst firm Counterpoint Research released the market share data of global XRs (including AR & VR headsets) in 2021.
The data shows that global XR shipments fell 6% year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2021. While the largest single category of VR headsets (standalone) grew slightly, all other categories declined significantly, leading to an annual decline in overall shipments

Specifically, thanks to the continued popularity of Meta's Oculus Quest 2, Oculus led the market throughout 2021, with Meta gaining 80% market share in the fourth quarter of 2021, up from 74% in the fourth quarter of last year. It was followed by DPVR, which finished second for four consecutive quarters with overseas expansion and hardware customization for corporate customers.
In addition, Pico came in third, with a market share of 5% in the fourth quarter of last year. Since being acquired by TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, Pico continues to show promise with its popular equipment and more resources.
In the fourth quarter of 2021, the shipment share of VR stand-alone machines exceeded 90%, up from 82% in the fourth quarter of 2020. It's important to note that the form factor trend for virtual reality has shifted from fixed to standalone, with standalone form factors still dominating until Sony's next-generation PlayStation VR is released later in 2022.
