At the intersection of art and technology, artist Sougwen Chung's GENESIS explores the new spatial and temporal changes in the human hand and the mechanical form, and the synergy between the two. The collection is the first phase of an ever-growing library of forms, a series of speculative machine structures shaped through the artist's exclusive virtual reality process. In a cinematic symphony that blurs the boundaries between sculpture, painting, and dance, suspended mechanical lines unfold to reveal colourful serpentine forms that echo the intricate choreography of Sougwen Chung.
These gestures were collected as motion data, culminating in a groundbreaking spatial dataset that would lay the groundwork for the upcoming D.O.UG._6 AI system that would drive the creation of symbiotic machines. Sougwen Chung shares, "I've been thinking a lot about hybridity – the medium of art as well as machine systems. The medium of art spans a dataset of three-dimensional lines that are painting, sculpture, and dance. It is a process of sculpting, thinking not only about the lines drawn, but also about the future of robotic form. A process of embodiment to create different speculative machines in my own imagination. ”
Returning the traces of handmade in the virtual space to the tactile solidity of the physical world, a series of 3D-printed sculptures resembling liquid mercury were then made and installed in Milan in collaboration with Bulgari. The first of these datasets debuted with HOFA Gallery at Art Dubai Digital 2024 on February 28 with the launch of the first NFT airdrop.
Generate digital geometries for physical fabrication from the lines recorded in space, returning handmade marks in virtual space to the tactile materiality of physical space. THIS UNIQUE GENESIS PROCESS, CALLED LIFE/LINES, BRINGS TOGETHER THE LATEST ADVANCEMENTS IN 3D MARKER MAKING, VIRTUAL REALITY FABRICATION, AND MOTION-CAPTURED AVATARS.
The work is sculpted using spatial techniques, in which the lines drawn are suspended and the proportions are a permeable medium. The movement of the artist's body in motion is recorded and assembled into a 3D body to show the process of unfolding as a performance, a cinematic unfolding trace, blurring the boundaries between architecture, sculpture, painting and dance.
Sougwen Chung's avatars guide the creation of each sculpture, immersing the audience in a seamless virtual performance, resulting in a captivating abstract snake figure in the first installation. The result is a process of speculating on the collapse of the boundaries of architecture, painting, and dance. The serpentine shape is suspended within the room, reflecting the texture of liquid mercury, and its contours reflect the intricate processes on the surrounding walls.
The complex expressions of 3D gestures in GENESIS Forms are brought to life through a variety of manufacturing techniques, from large-format 3D printing to custom chrome plating.
GENESIS highlights the integration of sensory processes and machine intelligence to shape the perception of the relationship between labeled images, while utilizing technologies such as infrared, lidar, and position sensors. Thus, this research project lays a new foundation for the integration of embodied cognitive processes, based on the belief that novel sensory processes can create new speculative forms. This convergence of art and technology reveals new forms of expression, demonstrating the potential of spatial perception and human-computer interaction in shaping emerging artistic subjectivity.
Regarding the role of AI in art and its practice, Sougwen Chung shared, "For me, a work of art is not an image of completion, but a process. How do we find ways to think beyond images? Generative AI models are trained on images; The relationship between text prompts and image generation is interesting, but in this relationship, strokes, markers are erased. Perhaps a sense of embodied authorship.
I tried to resist the desperation of the lines disappearing and really celebrate the marker-making process by reinventing it. The hope for the future of art is to know that there are still very interesting ways to interact with creative technologies and tools. The process of my creation is not to replace a medium, but to create a whole new genre. ”
