"Body as Architecture" Body Sculpture Workshop Creation Sharing Session

The Body as Architecture Body Sculpture Workshop is a public event ancillary to the exhibition "Perceptual City: Creativity and Construction of New Cultural Facilities" at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, co-curated by the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning and Shenzhen Handshake 302 Public Art Center. The workshop experience lasts for 3 days, including 1 day workshop + 1 day of creation + 1 day of sharing session, and the created works will be exhibited in the "Handshake Hall 302" in the future.

Feel the different city in the dialogue between the body and the building

At the beginning of April, the "Body as Architecture" Body Sculpture Workshop issued a recruitment order, looking for partners living in Shenzhen to participate in the creation of body sculpture. The organizers selected 10 applicants from among the applicants, who have different backgrounds and occupations, ranging in age from their 20s to 50s, and have different life stories from Shenzhen.

During the first two days of the workshop, Liu He, a day tutor, led the participants through the center of Futian, starting from the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, passing through the Civic Center and Futian High-speed Railway Station, and entering Liancheng Xintiandi, connecting the important scenes in the central area of Futian, feeling the body's feedback to the environment, and awakening the emotional connection between individuals and places. Subsequently, the physical instructor and sculpture artist Xu Yixin conducted physical training indoors with the participating partners, and came to the Sky Corridor of the Central Book City to start physical creation.

Liu He told reporters that the "Body as Architecture" Body Sculpture Workshop is a local community experiment, inviting participants to feel and empathize with themselves through physical feeling, understanding, and empathy for an urban space that they are close to but have never understood, and to tell the spatial relationship they understand in the way of body art. Xu Yixin hopes that the participants can imagine together through their bodies how human beings can use structures to connect spaces when houses are not yet built. In the organic dance of contact improvisation, participants perceive the urban places around them through the body's perceptual system.

Deepen your understanding of the city through body creation

In the creation sharing session, 10 participants shared their physical creations one by one, showing their physical creations to the public and exchanging their new urban senses. Ying Yilin, who was born and grew up in Shenzhen in the 90s, chose a tree in the square of the Central Book City, integrated herself with this tree, and found a quiet place in the bustling and bustling city center. "I named this work "Home" in the hope that through the integration of the body and the environment, I can find the home of the soul. ”

Tan Anqiao is a post-90s generation who travels between Guangzhou and Hong Kong all year round, and Shenzhen is a must for her on every trip, so she chooses a long, long barrier-free passage in the civic center. An Qiao said that through the details of the barrier-free passage, you can feel that the city of Shenzhen is trying to provide as much convenience as possible for people who are not convenient to travel. Sister Silk is a retired industrial designer who has been in Shenzhen for 30 years, and her works are selected in the Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, and through body language, she expresses her love for design innovation and love for life.

Liu He said that when the "body language" in architecture and the "structural language" in the body intersect, it constitutes the communication and telling between people and the city, and the original intention of the "Body as Architecture" body sculpture workshop is to establish a spatial field through the body, so that each body can become the master and narrator of the city, make full use of the body perception system to observe the urban places around us, start to feel the state and emotion of the space from the surrounding community, and establish an emotional link with the space, so as to embodily draw out our sense of belonging to the city where we live together.

Enhance the sense of belonging and identity to Shenzhen in the experience

On December 19 last year, the exhibition "Perception City: Creativity and Construction of New Cultural Facilities" was launched at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, presenting the design ideas and construction characteristics of Shenzhen's "new cultural facilities" to the public, allowing the audience to understand the city of Shenzhen through the planning and design of these cultural facilities.

Li Kechun, the curator of this exhibition, told reporters that the "Body as Architecture" Body Sculpture Workshop is an ancillary public activity of the exhibition "Perceptual City - Creativity and Construction of New Cultural Facilities" of the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, and is also an important supplement to the exhibition, guiding participants to go out of the exhibition and write a unique personal narrative with the city in their daily life. Through the activities of the workshop, on the one hand, more people can participate in the experience, and at the same time, it will also increase people's sense of belonging and identity to the city. With the successful holding of the workshop, the exhibition has come to an end, and the exhibition will close on May 5th. In the future, the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning will hold more interactive public activities for the public, so that more people can know about our city.
